The 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible is a documented Q-code 351 Cobra Jet example equipped with its factory four-speed manual transmission. This Cougar is one of just 64 XR-7 convertibles produced with the 351-CJ, four speed and convertible combination for the 1973 model year. Finished in Gold Glamour Metallic with Ginger leather bucket seats and a power black convertible top, this Cougar is in overall great condition! With its uncommon drivetrain specification, believed original mileage, and well optioned factory equipment, this Cougar is a wonderful find for Ford enthusiasts!
The Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet occupied a unique place in the early 1970s performance market by combining the long-hood styling and luxury appointments Mercury was known for with genuine factory muscle car hardware. The XR-7 Cobra Jet delivered performance and luxury in one package, which is exactly why low-production examples like this factory four-speed convertible have become increasingly respected among collectors. This Cougar is a Dearborn-built XR-7 convertible originally equipped with the Q-code 351 Cobra Jet V8. The Marti Report shows a scheduled build date of April 3, 1973, finished in Gold Glamour Metallic with Ginger Leather interior and a black power convertible top. Factory equipment includes power steering, power front disc brakes, power windows, four way power driver seat, AM/FM stereo radio, sports console with clock, styled steel wheels, center console, tinted glass, and SelectAire air conditioning. This Cougar has all the desirable features when it was built and is a rare find!
The exterior of this Cougar is in overall great condition, and the Gold Glamour Metallic paint shows good luster and shine throughout. There are some areas showing age and use. Chrome bumpers, grille trim, wheel moldings, and exterior brightwork are in excellent condition. The black power convertible top is in excellent condition. The headlights, fog lights, turn signals, reverse lights and windshield wipers are in working condition. The Cougar has dual side mirrors, antenna, Ginger leather boot cover, BF Goodrich radial tires and steel wheels. This Cougar is beautiful in the color combination and ready to drive condition!
The Cougar is trimmed in Ginger leather, woodgrain dash and brown carpets that is in overall excellent condition! The brown carpet and floor mats were replaced in late 2025. The tachometer, speedometer, oil pressure gauge, amperage gauge, fuel gauge, and radio are functioning. The clock does not work. The Cougar has A/C, heat, defrost and AM/FM radio. This Cougar is in great condition and is ready to be enjoyed!
Power comes from the original Q-code 351 Cobra Jet V8 paired with its factory four-speed manual transmission with Hurst shifter and Motorcraft 2-barrel carburetor. The 351-CJ produces 264 horsepower and 314lbs of torque. The Cougar has power steering, power front disc brakes with rear drums, and dual exhaust. The Cougar was serviced in 12/2025 and a new battery replaced in 5/2025. This is a road-ready muscle car that is a blast to drive!
