Harry's Thoughts

This is one of the most important Pre-War Rolls-Royces in existence. It is absolutely one of the most elegant, stylish cars ever made. Being awarded Most Elegant at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is most fitting. It also happens to be the best driving Phantom I have ever experienced (and I've driven many!).

THE ESSENTIALS

This 1928 Rolls-Royce Springfield Phantom I Riviera Town Car by Brewster is inarguably one of the most important Pre-War Rolls-Royces ever made.  One of just ten Riviera Town Cars made by Brewster, this exudes elegance and sophistication.  This Town Car was sent to France in 1935 by Mary Clews Blumenthal, the second wife of the New York financier.  The Riviera Town Car was sent to their chateau in Grasse, on the Riviera in France.  After World War II, the Rolls returned to the US and has been in several notable collections.  Today, this remains the nicest driving Phantom I we have ever experienced and can be shown at any concours event worldwide.

In the December 1954 issue of Esquire magazine, the Riviera was featured in a two-page spread for the issues main article.

In 2010, the Riviera completed the Pebble Beach Tour D’Elegance and was awarded the Nethercutt Most Elegant award at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.  Note the rakish windscreen and how it folds down flat, like a phaeton or roadster.  In 2011, this Riviera was featured and sold at the Gooding & Company Scottsdale auction for $687,500.  1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Riviera Town Car | Gooding & Company

The Rolls presents in very high point concours condition with many original features such as the rear passenger compartment and the dashboard and instrumentation.  It is absolutely stunning in person.  Please look carefully at the 215 photos captured in the photo gallery.

The 7.7 liter inline six cylinder is so quiet one believes the engine to have stalled when approaching a stop.  It effortlessly accelerates to 55 mph continuing its whisper quiet performance.  We assume high speed rear end gearing had been fitted at one point.  The suspension, braking and steering are all excellent and appears as one would expect when new.
