Harry's Thoughts
THE ESSENTIALS
This 1939 Ford coupe remained with one owner between 1951 and 2019, and it was gifted to the current owner in 2021. An ensuing refurbishment was completed by Deluxe Auto Design of Mesa, Arizona, between 2021 and 2024. Work included refinishing the body in blue, rebuilding the 221ci flathead V8 and three-speed manual transmission, and reupholstering the interior in tan mohair. Equipment includes black 15″ steel wheel with chrome hubcaps wheels, hydraulic drum brakes, turn signals, and dual side mirrors. Additional brake, electrical, and ignition system work was completed in 2025. This 1939 Ford coupe is now offered on dealer consignment with over $60k in service records since 2021 and a clean Arizona title.
The two-door bodywork was disassembled and sandblasted before being refinished in blue in 2021. The glass and seals were also replaced in 2021, with replacement chrome trim installed at that time. The car is fitted with front and rear bumpers, dual side mirrors, a chrome grille, turn signals, and dual windshield wipers.
Black 15″ steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps, trim rings, and G78-15 Remington wide-whitewall tires. A non-matching spare is mounted in the trunk. Braking is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drums, which were introduced for the 1939 model year. The braking system was overhauled during the refurbishment, and the master cylinder was replaced in 2025.
The interior bench seat has been reupholstered in tan mohair. The headliner, carpets, and door panels were also replaced. The car is fitted with lap belts and was re-wired in 2021. The non-locking glovebox is not equipped with a clock.
The three-spoke steering wheel was resurfaced in 2021 and sits ahead of the body-color dashboard housing a replacement 100-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 128 miles since the gauges were replaced in 2025. Total mileage is unknown.
The 221ci flathead V8 was rebuilt in 2021 with a replacement block, camshaft, pistons, seals, rings, bearings, and rods. The cylinder heads and crankshaft were refurbished, and the engine was repainted. The radiator and starter were also rebuilt, and the water pump was replaced. In 2025, the ignition points, condenser, and coil were replaced.
The three-speed manual transmission was rebuilt in 2021 and received a replacement, clutch, flywheel, and throw-out bearing at that time. The selling dealer describes the transmission as difficult to shift.
