This is a beautiful restored 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 that needs nothing to be enjoyed and can be shown at any regional show or concours.  Whether for use as a classic driver or for regional shows, this is a wonderful example in every respect.

This 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 was the subject of a refurbishment in approximately 2000 and has been finished in bronze metallic over beige vinyl. Powered by a 4.2-liter 2F inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case, the truck features a removable hardtop with a beige roof as well as power steering, front disc brakes, 15″ steel wheels, a roll bar, an Eclipse CD stereo, and inward-facing rear jump seats.

The truck has been repainted bronze metallic and features a removable hardtop with a beige roof as well as a chrome front bumper and rear bumperettes, rear ambulance-style doors, and a tow ball.

Gray 15″ steel wheels feature polished hubcaps and are mounted with 30×9.5″ Yokohama Geolandar H/T G056 tires, and a matching spare is affixed to a swing-away rear carrier. The truck is equipped with manually locking front hubs and power steering. Braking is from front discs and rear drums.

The front bucket seats and inward-facing rear jump seats are trimmed in beige vinyl, and appointments include a roll bar, a heater, an Eclipse CD stereo, and aftermarket speakers.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames a 100-mph speedometer and gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 58k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership.

The 4.2-liter 2F inline-six is equipped with a single carburetor. The thermostat was replaced in 2021 and the oil pan was changed in 2022.

Power is routed to the rear or all four wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case.

The sporty appearance of this MR2 is undoubtedly aided by it’s Absolutely Red factory paint color and black manual folding convertible top. The new looking black top retracts and settles in place in moments.  The paint is in excellent condition, with great depth and clarity. There are two minor flaws of note, with a tiny chip on the passenger side door and a indentation on the front fascia near the passenger side fog lamp.  Otherwise, this MR2 is in showroom condition.

The black interior matches the top and pulls together the sporty aesthetic of the car perfectly. Despite the overall short length of the car, the seats and seating position will accommodate drivers well over six feet tall. In fact, the owner is 6’3″ tall and has a 997 Porsche 911 and remarks that it has an almost identical seating position.  The leather seats are sporty in appearance, with no noticeable flaw. One will also notice the optional MR2 Spyder branded floor mats, and the carbon fiber applique on some of the components in the center stack. As with the rest of the car, the interior looks as well preserved as the exterior.

Mechanically, this is exactly what you would expect from a manufacturer known for reliability. The  1.8 liter transverse twin cam, 16 valve four-cylinder engine provides enough forward momentum to hum down the road. The 5-speed short throw shifter engages quickly in and out of the gates and allows for spirited driving for the enthusiast. The confidence inspiring Lotus designed suspension and steering will have the owner wanting to head to the canyons for a little fun. Regular service intervals, as few as they have been over it’s 13,000 mile lifespan, have allowed this car to drive like new and should offer the next owner many years of fun behind the wheel. All service records, including a warranty replaced battery in 2019 and new Yokohama tires purchased in 2018, are provided with the car. Also provided are the actual window sticker, sales brochures, and manuals. A perfectly clean one-owner CARFAX report has been added to this listing with a detailed and documented service history.

The custom two-tone white over dark green paint shows well and is in overall excellent condition.  Even in direct sunlight, the car has tremendous depth, shine, and luster. While not free from blemishes, most would be hard pressed to find an issue on initial inspection.  The brightwork on this FJ is largely original and in good condition with some minor scratches and some very minor pitting, most notably on the door handles. The custom ARB front bumper with integrated WARN Zeon 10 winch looks right at home on this Toyota and many will notice the three LED light bars seated on the bumper, which pair well with the aftermarket black LED headlamps and black painted grille. Adding to the overall dark theme of the accessories are 35″ Toyo Open Country M/T tires wrapped around flat-black 17″ Method wheels with Aisin front lockers. Other exterior highlights include removable doors, custom rock sliders and a custom swing-out rear tire carrier.

The interior is equally custom and matches the exterior like a glove. You’ll notice immediately the custom black and olive leather upholstery along with its matching leather headliner and door panels.  Dynamat sound deadening has been added to the interior, and the floors have been coated in a bedliner material and lined with rubber mats.  These additions help to ensure that this will be impervious to rust and will prove to be relatively quiet and comfortable.

Additional features include an integrated roll cage, a custom center console, a Rugged Radio CB system, a heater with ducting to the front and rear, an ARB on-board air compressor, and a JVC CD stereo wired to a 410-watt power inverter and four Alpine speakers and tweeters. A black three-spoke steering wheel frames a custom instrument panel that houses AutoMeter instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer with an inset 8k-rpm tachometer, and a combination gauge for fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage. Custom rocker switches for vehicle functions have been added to the dash, and the digital odometer shows just over 300 miles, all of which have been added by the seller.

Mechanically, this FJ runs and drives great, and understandably so. The 5.7-liter LS6 V8 crate engine comes alive with a quick twist of the key and is paired with GM’s 4L60E four-speed automatic. This electronic transmission is said to have been fitted with an aftermarket valve body, shift kit, and kick-down cable and sends the power to the wheels through a twin-stick Atlas II two-speed transfer case. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the Tom Woods driveshafts, a custom Toyota front axle, Dana Dynatrac 60 rear axle, and front a rear ARB air lockers. As you can see, this is not just built for show, it was built to be just as capable off-road as it is on the highway.

Overall, this Toyota is one of the coolest FJ resto-mods that we’ve seen, with no expense spared. With only 300 miles on the build, this one-of-a-kind FJ55 will give you years of enjoyment, in whatever manner you choose to enjoy it.  Please see the accompanying 158-point inspection report for more details. Our showroom has never had a Japanese motorcar in it before, but this is so incredibly preserved we wanted to have it as an offering to our clients. With only 33,000 miles it is similar to a three year old 32 year old car!!

The paint is all original from the factory, and it looks fantastic! The black has a deep luster and has very few imperfections, which are noted in the photo gallery. The top of the rear bumper has some sun damage that could benefit from touch up paint, but the rest of the car is excellent overall. The interior is absolutely fantastic. There is no evidence of use or wear in the interior. And the car comes with a clean CARFAX with no history of accidents or other issues.

The MR2 still has its original stereo and it has newer radials. This car is a fantastic high performing MR2 that would be a crowd pleaser at any cars and coffee. There is only one MR2 like this.
