“Nellie” is a beautifully restored award-winning 1925 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Springfield Oxford Touring bodied by Merrimac. Earning a class award at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours and Best in Class at the 2023 Amelia Island Concours, this Silver Ghost can be enjoyed immediately on the show field or on CCCA CARavans or Silver Ghost tours. Nellie presents as being nearly perfect while being a perfect touring car for Silver Ghost tours worldwide. With a well-documented history since new and her RROC chronology since 1951, this is a true late Springfield Ghost featuring left hand steering, its original engine, and a gorgeous restoration performed by Competition Motors. The ownership history of this Ghost includes many of the marque’s top collectors. Finally, the drivetrain has been restored by top specialists in North America, including Frank Cooke and Steve Littin.

Ordered new by Mrs. Nellie A Cluett, whose family were the longtime owners of Arrow Shirts but was personally well known for the Grenfell Mission where she helped supply much needed food and supplies to missions along the east coast. Nellie’s Ghost was delivered new to her home in Troy, NY on May 15, 1926.

While Mrs. Cluett lived until 1959, by 1951 the Ghost was acquired by Alfred J. Meyer, Jr. of Plymouth, MA. Mr. Meyer and “Nellie” are included in the RROC Directories until 1971. By November of 1979, Nellie had become part of the esteemed Rick Carroll collection in Jensen Beach, FL.

By December of 1984, Nellie had become part of the incredible collection of Friendly Ice Cream founder Prestley Blake in Somers, CT. In 1991, Jacques Bambling of Easton, MA acquired her. Mr. Bambling was a professor at the University of Idaho and had collected many vintage photos of the Ghost. By September of 1998, S142ML had been acquired by Donald and Ann Hare of Rollinsford, NH. The Hare’s enjoyed Nellie for about 23 years and sold it in August of 2021.

Over the years Nellie has been restored and repainted many times. She has been completely and thoroughly restored, including the engine being rebuilt (Frank Cooke circa 2006), new radiator core, rewired, etc. Don and Anne had Nellie meticulously maintained and serviced until last year by the experts at Competition Motors in Plymouth, MA. Competition Motors extensively restored her for concours showing and touring including beautiful new paint, interior, upholstery, convertible top and extensive mechanical restoration.

The historical file for Nellie is very extensive. She is documented in Rolls-Royce in America by John DeCampi, in photos from Duke University in the 1950’s, a 1981 postcard from the Henry Austin Clark Museum, and in the Flying Lady from 1993, 2002 and 2004. She has participated in the RROC’s 2004 Sea to Shining Sea Tour and earned a National Second Place in the Concours Class at Williamsburg RROC Annual Meeting. Needless to say, Nellie has unquestionable provenance, is a proven tour veteran and is a concours award winner- a wonderful combination!

Her livery is a beautiful deep burgundy with black fenders and wire wheels. The paint is fantastic and in excellent condition. The brightwork is all nickel and in excellent polished condition that is ready for the concours field. The convertible top is perfect and is black on its exterior and tan for the headliner. Nellie has a trunk rack with a correct black leather trunk with a black canvas cover that is also in as-new condition. The overall condition of the exterior is nearly perfect in every regard, definitely a very high point restoration.

The drum headlights and cowl lights and tubular front and rear bumpers are all in excellent condition with their nickel finish. The iconic Rolls-Royce radiator grill shell, early-style horizontal grill slats and the Spirit of Ecstasy are all correctly finished in polished nickel.

The nickel-plated windshield is in two pieces, allowing for increased ventilation. The rear passengers benefit from a rear windshield that is also beautifully nickel plated and in excellent condition. Nellie looks terrific with the top up or down!! She comes equipped with a black canvas full interior tonneau cover and a second black canvas tonneau cover for just the rear passengers. These tonneau covers are great for tours and shows.

The interior features beautiful burgundy leather that is in as-new condition and is very soft and supple showing no wear. The carpets are a matching burgundy Wilton wool with burgundy leather binding. Nellie has two folding jump seats, allowing for up to seven passengers. The original wood grained dashboard is in very nice condition, with full instrumentation that are all in very nice cosmetic condition. All the instruments are functioning, including her Chelsea 8 Day clock, the Stewart Warner speedometer, US Gauge Co. fuel pressure and oil pressure gauges, Weston Electric Amperes gauge and her The Motometer Co. temperature gauge.

The numbers matching engine and engine compartment are absolutely gorgeous!! Power is provided by the venerable 7.4-liter L-head inline-six that is said to be rebuilt by Frank Cooke in about 2006 and is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The combination of the polished brass, copper, aluminum, and black paint are stunning. The engine sounds great, and she runs and drives very well with excellent power. The brakes, suspension and chassis are all in excellent condition and we know of no mechanical issues at all. Cosmetically the chassis looks very nice and is well finished. The leather gaiters wrapping the springs all appear to be complete and in excellent condition.

For more information and details, please call or text Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or email harry@classic.bz. This Silver Ghost is available for inspection in Phoenix. We are pleased to coordinate inspections, and we help coordinate shipping worldwide. We also have financing partners if you are interested in financing.

This 1926 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Doctor’s Coupe, chassis number S296PL, represents the final year of Silver Ghost production in Springfield, Massachusetts. One of only 1,701 Springfield examples built between 1921 and 1926, this remarkable automobile has undergone a full frame-off restoration to exacting factory standards. Finished in rich caramel and brown with a tobacco Connolly leather interior, this Silver Ghost embodies the essence of early Rolls-Royce craftsmanship and remains one of the most historically significant examples in existence, believed to be the only Springfield Silver Ghost Doctor’s Coupe in the world.

Built by Rolls-Royce of America at its Springfield, Massachusetts facility, the Silver Ghost was the model that established the marque’s reputation as “the best car in the world.” This example was originally bodied as a Pall Mall Tourer by Merrimack Body Company, though the current Doctor’s Coupe body by Hume of Boston was likely the winter coachwork added later. Delivered new in 1925 in California, chassis S296PL is believed to have been first owned by silent film legend Gloria Swanson, followed by noted hotelier D.M. Linnard, builder of the Fairmont and Ambassador Hotels. Subsequent owners include F.K. Burnham, M.C. Mogensen, and W.J. Hennessey of San Francisco. In 1977, the current owner acquired the car from the widow of Robert Atley, the Depot Engineer of the Springfield Rolls-Royce Factory, who had maintained and driven it for decades with his family in California.

Under the stewardship of the current owner, a longtime Concours judge for Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Jaguar, the Silver Ghost underwent a highly documented frame-off restoration. At great expense, purported to be over $300,000 by the current owner, the work returned the car to exact original specification, including the fitted walnut cases and the complete picnic basket ensemble with original silverware, china, and crystal. The chassis was later exhibited as a display at the Blackhawk Behring Auto Museum, further affirming its authenticity and craftsmanship.

The exterior is finished in two-tone Caramel and Brown paint, displaying excellent gloss and detailing throughout. Dual covered side-mounted spares, leather strap-on mirrors, and a period-correct leather windshield visor add both form and function. The cream-painted wire wheels are fitted with newer 33×5 tires, while subtle accents such as the brass trim, detailed badging, and balanced proportions reinforce the visual grace that made the Silver Ghost an icon of its era.

The interior is upholstered in rich Tobacco Brown Connolly leather with Cognac Wilton wool carpeting, both in excellent condition. The left-hand-drive driver’s bucket seat and folding jump seat complement a half rear bench, creating an intimate yet practical cabin arrangement. A walnut burl dashboard features recalibrated brass-bezel gauges, and fitted walnut cabinetry completes the luxurious period presentation. This cabin is both a tactile and visual tribute to Springfield’s master craftsmen.

Power comes from the renowned 7,428 cc inline six-cylinder engine, producing 40/50 horsepower and paired with a three-speed manual transmission. With dual Bosch distributors and leaf spring suspension, the Silver Ghost was renowned for its smoothness and reliability, qualities that cemented Rolls-Royce’s reputation worldwide. This particular example remains a mechanically correct automobile, with a restored fuel system that has yet to be completed to working consistency. Included with the sale are its complete original tool set, historical documentation dating back to the 1920s, and the complete fitted picnic and service kits.

This is a spectacular and well-known long wheelbase 1925 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Tourer by E.P. Reeves that is a multiple RREC concours award winner and an incredible touring example. Being one of the last Silver Ghosts produced, this example features all the desirable features such as the four-wheel brakes and improved power. The polished aluminum body is an incredible display of craftmanship and is simply stunning. This Ghost has faithfully driven about 8,000 miles per year for its present owner and is ready to offer a wonderful ownership experience to its next caretaker.

122AU had been earlier identified as 48TM and was modernized and renumbered by the factory in 1924. December of 1924 saw the end of the 20-year production of the Silver Ghost, making 122AU one of the last chassis produced. 122AU was originally ordered on July 31, 1924, to be a Barker Pullman Limousine and was delivered to its first owner, Mr. David Sherman of London, on May 20, 1925. By February 10, 1927, 122AU had been acquired by the Honorable Lord Shuttleworth. Three owners followed until 1979, when a thorough restoration and rebody in its beautiful polished aluminum livery by E.P. Reeves. This award-winning restoration would be completed in 1985. Mr. Reeves had a stellar reputation within the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club (RREC) for brilliant restorations. 122AU won Best in Class and the Douglas Wood Trophy at the 1985 RREC Rally and Concours at Courteenhall in Northamptonshire. Further mechanical and cosmetic care has been provided by Silver Chalice Motor Service in Sheffield, including a refreshening of the engine in 2011. In 2021, 122AU was imported into the US by its present owner, Mr. James Rice in Texas. Mr. Rice has enthusiastically used 122AU on average about three times per week covering about 8,000 miles per year.

The polished aluminum livery makes 122AU absolutely one of the most striking Silver Ghosts extant. The quality of the coachbuilding is spectacular. The massive 150-inch wheelbase is beautifully proportioned with the dual-windshield touring body. The silver painted 21-inch wheels and ample nickel-plated accessories are all in very nice condition, with only normal use showing since its restoration. There is a useful black luggage trunk resting on the trunk rack affixed to the rear of the Ghost and two side mounted spare wheels appear on each front fender.

The blue leather pleated interior is also in very nice condition with the leather being soft and supple. There is normal wear showing on the leather from use. The wood dashboard is in very nice condition and the full complement of instruments work well. The grey carpet is bound with blue leather and is also in nice condition. The Dark Blue canvas convertible top is in very good condition and comes complete with a full set of side curtains. There are also two tonneau covers for the passenger compartments, one for the front and one for the rear. The rear passenger compartment has two jump seats, and the dual windshield can easily be stowed down or can be erected and used to deflect the wind.

The engine compartment is also well detailed for show, with the brass and copper beautifully polished. The massive 7.4-liter side valve six cylinder is its original engine, number TU 144. The engine is smooth, quiet, and very powerful. The transmission is the later four-speed model and shifts easily through the gears. 122AU benefits from the later four-wheel brakes which are servo assisted. Six all new Firestone tires have been installed and the “Annual Service” was just completed. Even when Mr. Rice would drive 122AU in 108-degree Fahrenheit temperatures in Texas, the Ghost ran well without any issues of overheating (unlike its driver and occupants!).

122AU comes complete with a significant file history from new as well as service manuals and tools. Also included is a matching blue canvas cover for the radiator grill, to help reduce tarnish if the Ghost is stored. Please review the 183 photos in the photo gallery on the Classic Promenade website or review the three videos showing the detail about 122AU.

For more information and details, please call or text Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com. The Ghost is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom. We are pleased to offer FaceTime or WhatsApp live video inspections and we help coordinate shipping worldwide. We also have financing partners if you are interested in financing.

This is a gorgeous 1925 Rolls-Royce Springfield Silver Ghost Pall Mall Phaeton that has been shown at Europe’s leading concours event at Villa d’Este as well as participating on many tours. With a known history from new, donning its original beautiful phaeton coachwork and engine, this is a no excuses Silver Ghost that can be enjoyed on tours or at concours events. Being a later LHD Ghost, this benefits from the more advanced technology and has been set up well for reliable touring. Silver Ghosts are without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable and impressive motorcars of the period and this example doesn’t disappoint.

According to the factory records, S138MK was delivered new with its Merrimac built Pall Mall phaeton body number M-1244. The body plate is still on the Rolls and is shown in the photo gallery along with the 200 photos. Engine number 22564 was installed and is still in the Rolls today, the engine number is also shown in the photo gallery.

S138MK was originally delivered to Houston and used as the Rolls-Royce Trials Car on June 30, 1925. By May 14, 1928, S138MK had found its first owner, Mr. Paul E. Zehe, where it was delivered to his sprawling estate in New Rochelle, NY. Mr. Zehe enjoyed the Rolls for the next 16 years until it was acquired by Mr. Thomas A Herbert of NYC and then to Lawrence Dame, the Art Editor of The Boston Herald. S138MK’s next caretaker was Mr. Thomas Petzold of Grosse Pointe Park, MI and Palm Beach, FL. Mr. Petzold acquired the Pall Mall on February 11, 1954 and enjoyed it for the next 24 years until it was acquired by Michael Gertner, Esq. of Newport Beach, CA. Mr. Gertner entered into the 1979 RROC Annual Meeting concours in Monterey, CA where it earned a place award. The Rolls had accumulated about 75,000 miles from new. Mr. Gertner continued to restore and improve the Ghost through his 13 years of ownership until it was acquired by Walter Steinemann of Morschwil, Switzerland. Mr. Steinemann was a longtime RREC board member and was the editor of the highly acclaimed “Alpine Eagle” magazine. He had about 27 Rolls-Royces and Bentleys in his collection.

In 2007, Mr. Steinemann entered the Ghost in the 1,000 mile 7E RAID tour from Switzerland to Paris. The Ghost performed beautifully. By 2009, Mr. Steinemann entered S138MK in the Concours D’Elegance at Villa d’Este, arguably Europe’s most prestigious concours event. The link to his entry is here: Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost | Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este (concorsodeleganzavilladeste.com)

From Klaus-Josef Roßfeldt in Germany: “Apart from photos of S138MK that occasionally appeared in ‘Alpine Eagle’, the magazine of the Swiss Section of the RREC this particular car is shown repeatedly (e.g. pages 4 and 6) in the book “Faszination auf Rädern – Rolls-Royce & Bentley” >>Fascination on Wheels – RR & Bentley<< by Walter Steinemann, Moerschwil, Switzerland. The book was published in 2002 as a limited edition with a print-run of 1,500 copies. Walter Steinemann devoted pages 84 and 85 of his book to show 5 further photos of what obviously has been one of his favorite motor cars. A further photo is found page 373. Walter Steinemann had another book “Rolls-Royce – Der beste Wagen der Welt” published in 1990, too. That was of smaller size with only 80+ pages and merely B&W photos were shown. My check showed two photos of S138MK did appear in that tome, page 13.”

The livery is finished in a beautiful Dove Gray that is complemented by all nickel-plated accessories, lights and the iconic Rolls-Royce Grill. The Dove Gray is accented with red and a double black coachstripe that runs the length of the Ghost. The paint has a wonderful shine and luster. There is a small amount of damage near the passenger side front fender near the side mount spare that can easily be corrected. The wire spoke wheels are painted black to completment the beautiful red leather interior and are donned with new Firestone black walled tires. The black canvas convertible top looks handsome and is in excellent condition. The Ghost is well accessorized with two tonneau covers, one for the rear passenger’s compartment and one for the driver’s compartment. These are crucial for touring as it allows you to pile in the luggage and ancillary articles on tours. The rear has the luggage rack with its original trunk that contains two trays full of Rolls-Royce tools, the wheel wrench, hammer and spares. The luggage trunk has a black canvas cover. The Boush & Lomb Optical Co. headlight lenses are perfect and look terrific.

The interior is highlighted with its beautiful red leather which looks as new. It is soft and supple and is comfortable and tight fitting. The matching red Wilton wool carpeting also looks great and matches perfectly the leather. The interior overall is gorgeous and in excellent condition. The dashboard is very original, and all of the instruments and gauges work as expected except the clock. The speedometer is set to kph presently as an overlay over the original mph. The wood graining on the dash could be refinished. It is well oiled, but the graining is heavy. We show numerous photos in the photo gallery.

The engine compartment is gorgeous. The venerable and massive 7.4-liter six-cylinder engine is very quiet and has incredible oil pressure of 22-25 pounds. The operating temperature was fantastic, ranging from 140 to 160 degrees, in 95 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temperature here in Phoenix! All of the instruments work well except the clock. We show about six miles of touring in the Ghost in our test drive videos, all performed in 95-degree weather.

This Ghost has been well set up for touring. Most of the chassis lubrication fittings have been replaced with modern Zirk fittings to make lubrication easy. It has also been fitted with front and rear turn signals and additional lighting. Luckily, being a late LHD Springfield chassis, this Ghost has a centralized lubrication system that makes normal use ten times easier than an older Ghost. Included in the trunk are the wheel wrench, proper lubrication syringe, hammer, spare spark plugs and two full trays of period tools.

We have this Silver Ghost priced very fairly. This is a very rare occasion to have a repatriated Ghost reenter the US market after such esteemed existence. She comes complete with the spirit of ecstasy mascot as well as the parking cap. Also included is the owner’s manual specifically for the LHD Springfield Silver Ghost and the two tonneau covers, tools and spares mentioned earlier.

The wire spoke wheels are painted red to mirror the beautiful red leather interior and are donned with now nearly ancient wide white walled tires ready to be replaced with new black walled tires (we were so tempted to replace them with black walled tires but decided to let the new owner do so).

We believe this 1925 Rolls-Royce Springfield Silver Ghost may be the best looking “Post-War” Silver Ghost in existence. This Ghost (S206ML) has won several national awards with the RROC and, more importantly, has toured for tens of thousands of miles throughout three different continents. S206ML is ready to be enjoyed on the concours field as well as tours anywhere in the world.

S206ML was ordered new for Paul Grant of NYC being delivered as a Sudbury sedan on May 18, 1926. S206ML was one of the last series of Silver Ghost chassis to be delivered from the USA factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Thus, its left-hand drive configuration and the best engineering developments offered by Springfield. S206ML has been included in the RROC directories and publications since 1958, shortly after the club was founded. Her history is very well documented in multiple books, factory records and RROC magazines. By 1965, S206ML was owned by A. Harling from Maryland until acquired by Kenneth Wessel from Ohio in December 1986 as a pristine original car with less than 18,000 miles from new. Mr. Wessel set out on a complete restoration of her and earned an award at the 1990 RROC Annual Meeting in its present Ascot dual cowl phaeton configuration. By 2004, S206ML was acquired by the most admired Silver Ghost restorer in North America, Mr. Steve Littin from Ohio. Steve Littin earned a first place in the Touring Class for her at the RROC Annual Meeting in 2004 and at the 2006 Annual Meeting she earned the Best of Prior Prewar Touring Best of Show and the Most Silent Ghost. Mr. Littin also toured 6,000 miles across New Zealand with her with stellar performance. On March 30, 2011, she was acquired by her present owner for $425,000.

Subsequent to her acquisition, she benefitted from a $60,000 investment in a lacquer repaint in Belgium and retrimming in Switzerland. With her restoration freshened by her present owner, S206ML went on to win honors at the 2011 BCCM St. Moritz Concours, 2013 Basel Paris RAID Concours and Best of Show at the 2018 Park Place Concours in Dallas where she beat a competing Bugatti. She is still in gorgeous condition for concours or for touring.

The livery is spectacular with its nearly perfect burgundy lacquer paint complemented by spectacular polished aluminum and nickel-plated components. Being a Springfield Silver Ghost in such a sporting body, the wide white walled tires look just right. The tan canvas convertible top sits on top of the very low and rakish windshield that folds down flat if so desired. The angles of the front and rear windshield are the same and look incredibly sporty. Overall, this is the best-looking Silver Ghost from the “Post-War” period. We love its gorgeous dual cowl Ascot Sport Phaeton body as it combines the very best of both worlds: a very late Springfield Ghost chassis with the later stunning Ascot body. To see this in person is to be captivated by its presence.

The interior benefitted from a $20,000 investment in its correct tan leather with just the right amount of patina. The interior is surrounded with gorgeous wood with two complete bands of inlaid mother of pearl. The wood is held in place by closely placed flat head screws with each screw being perfectly aligned. This is the attention to detail involved in its restoration.

The engine compartment is very well done, showing some patina from its tens of thousands of miles of touring. We are continuing to detail her and will have her in concours condition in the coming weeks. The 7,428 CC Inline 6-Cylinder Engine is incredibly powerful and, more importantly, reliable for touring. S206ML has never failed to start and operate faithfully on its tours in Australia, New Zealand as well as throughout Europe and the United States. The addition of a Gear Vendor overdrive makes it a wonderful touring experience even on today’s highways. The chassis is beautifully detailed in burgundy and would be very presentable for concours display with simple additional detailing. S206ML is powerful and smooth.

Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts are supported by a very large community of owners and specialists. The Silver Ghost Association and the Silver Ghost Register are incredible resources. Also, Silver Ghost only tours are held around the world as these cars were designed to last forever and are powerful and handle exceptionally well for the era.

For more information and details, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or sales@classicpromenade.com. This Silver Ghost is available for viewing and inspection at our Phoenix showroom.

“Nellie” is a beautifully restored award-winning 1925 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Springfield Oxford Touring bodied by Merrimac.

Her livery is a beautiful deep burgundy with black fenders and a contrasting golden coachstripe. The wire wheels are also burgundy with the golden coachstripe.

Nellie comes with an Owner’s Manual and the wheel wrench.
