PRICE REDUCED! This is a beautifully restored, award winning 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II, chassis 3XJ, that is one of the famed Maharaja examples. Being royally commissioned, this bespoke Thrupp & Maberly all-weather tourer is one of the most beautiful designs having been sent back to its coachbuilder to be “updated” from the Hooper original body in 1935. This is an ideal example that would be welcomed at any concours event worldwide as well as a delight to drive.

Finished in Ultra Black with red dual pinstripes and retaining its original British registration plate, DS8794, this Phantom II remains in beautiful fully-restored condition with exceptional provenance and concours history. This Phantom has benefitted by being restored and maintained by several of the very best, most capable engineers in the Pre-War Rolls-Royce industry. During its restoration, 3XJ benefitted from the installation of an excellent power steering system. The power from its massive original 7.7-liter engine (ZH 25) and its precise and easy power steering makes it a pleasure to drive. As an all-weather tourer, the Phantom can be configured an open tourer or enclosed saloon with division. 3XJ is ideally suited for concours exhibition, RROC touring, or inclusion in a serious prewar collection focused on Indian Royal provenance.

Built in 1929, chassis 3XJ was originally ordered by His Highness Maharaja Rameshwar Singh Bahadur of Darbhanga, one of India’s most influential princely rulers and a devoted Phantom II patron. Delivered new to Calcutta aboard the S.S. Mulberra, the Rolls-Royce was first bodied by Hooper before returning to England in 1935 to receive the current Thrupp & Maberly all-weather tourer coachwork, a transformation documented by The Autocar in January 1936. This Phantom remained in the Darbhanga collection for 38 years before returning to England in 1967, at which time mileage was recorded at approximately 8,000 original miles. Chassis 3XJ later passed through notable collectors in the United States and Europe and underwent a comprehensive restoration between 1997 and 2009. This Phantom has a significant history at many of the most important RROC and concours events, including earning Best in Class at the 2009 Meadow Brook Concours, and exhibited at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the “Motor Cars of the Raj” class.

The exterior of chassis 3XJ is finished in deep Ultra Black with dual red coachlines and presents with beautiful depth consistent with an older, high-quality restoration. The gorgeous Thrupp & Maberly body features a distinctive swept cowl molding, skirted fenders, polished brightwork, and an all-weather folding roof that allows conversion from open tourer to fully enclosed saloon. The original and rare Grebel headlamps, parking lights and cowl-mounted searchlights as well as its dual horns remain in excellent cosmetic condition. Side-mounted dual spares, painted wire wheels with polished ACE wheel covers, and blackwall tires all remain in excellent condition.

The interior is trimmed in soft and supple brown leather and shows light creasing consistent with careful use. The Maharaja ordered 3XJ with special ivory steering wheel and controls. The ivory four-spoke steering wheel frames an engine turned metal dashboard with a full complement of gauges and ivory-colored controls. The driver and passenger clocks are present but not currently running. Seatbelts have been installed for four occupants, and the divider window glass separates the front and rear passenger compartments. The spectacular rear vanity cabinets feature book matched burled wood cabinetry with inlaid marquetry and four Rolls-Royce logo wine glasses, adding both visual elegance and period character.

The engine and engine compartment have been beautifully detailed during its restoration. 3XJ retains its original, numbers matching 7.7 liter dual-ignition inline six with dual ignition and magneto. The four-speed manual transmission has its special ordered ivory-handled floor shifter with its matching emergency brake lever. Semi-elliptical front springs and the rear cantilever system provide the refined ride quality for which the Phantom II is known. Extensive mechanical and cosmetic work was carried out between 1997 and 2009 by leading specialists in England and the United States including Fiennes Motor Engineers, The Vintage Garage, Sports Classics, D&D Classics, E.F. Murphy, Classic Concours Restoration and Doug Seibert Automotive. The most notable restoration work was completed by Sports Classics who rebuilt the engine with new cylinder head, pistons, bearings, seals and completed engine detailing and rebuilt the transmission with new seals. Flagstaffs, electric fuel pump and power steering were installed. All electric was rewired to the original wire specifications. The generator electric starter and water pump were rebuilt. The lamp fixtures were rebuilt, rechromed, resilvered & rewired by Appleyard Vintage Headlamp Restoration Co. Fiennes Engineering in England rebuilt the fuel vac system, replaced kingpins and rebuilt shock absorbers. Regular maintenance was completed by Siebert Rolls-Royce in Rochester, NY. This Phantom II is known for light steering, smooth operation, and reliable tour performance. Chassis 3XJ is accompanied by original factory build sheets and extensive documentation.

SALE PENDING to OR!! This is a beautifully preserved example of the iconic 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Brewster Newport Town Car that has been loved and cared for since new by major collectors. 298AJS is one of eight of the gorgeous and desirable Newport Town Cars coachbuilt by Brewster. Being an AJS series Phantom II, this represents one of only 125 left hand drive with center gear shift Rolls-Royces made with all of the most refined improvements. Having accumulated a mere 37,954 miles from new, this has been a part of many top collections including that of Bruce Meyer and the Academy of Arts in San Fransisco. 298AJS has been owned by RROC members since 1951.

Ordered new through Rolls-Royce of America on January 21, 1930 for Mrs. Elizabeth Horne of Sewickley, PA (with further residences at 550 Park Avenue, Manhattan and Southampton, New York), the complete chassis and body were dispatched from the factory on July 31, 1933. By August 5, 1933, 298AJS had arrived in New York aboard the SS Soythia. By 1951, John Hunt had acquired the Town Car where it was listed in the 1953 RROC directory, two years after the establishment of the RROC. In 2004, the noted collector Bruce Meyer from Beverley Hills enjoyed the Rolls until it was part of the famed Richard Stephens collection, the founder of the Academy of Arts in San Fransisco.

298AJS is the ultimate in luxury with its two-toned Gray and Black livery. Over the past year, the present owner has repainted most of the fenders in its original Masons Black with beautiful shine and luster. The Black on the upper portions of the body and hood appear to be original along with the Gray sides of the body. There are many small areas of touched up paint in the higher use areas but overall it looks wonderful and would present beautifully in a preservation concours class.

The body lines of the Newport Town Car are considered one of perfect proportions, with excellent style lines and a wonderful mix of elegance and beauty. The long sweeping fenders, raked windshield, long hood eliminating the cowl, stylized Brewster door handles and even the chrome door caps are all touches unique to Brewster.

The interior is beautifully preserved with restoration performed only as needed. The driver’s compartment is a delight to experience when driving. The open chauffer’s compartment with its raked windscreen makes it very comfortable for driving. All of the instruments work as they should, save for the fuel gauge and the clock. The original black dashboard has superficial cracking from the original lacquer and the black leather seating has been replaced.

The passenger compartment is in spectacular original condition. The wood appears to be a unique black and taupe painted finish in a simple and elegant art deco design. The grey wool broadcloth is in gorgeous original condition with German Silver finished door and window handles. There are twin jump seats allowing for five passengers in the rear compartment with the chauffeurs sliding window providing any needed privacy. Twin vanities and a shade for the rear window complete the formality of the interior. Overall, this is a fantastic original interior that is sure to win awards for preservation.

The engine compartment is home to the massive 7.7 liter inline-six engine that is the ultimate of refinement. This is the original engine (No. R75A) with matching numbered components. The later AJS Series engine delivered smoother power and better performance and is coupled with a four-speed manual transmission, which includes synchromesh on third and fourth gears. The engine compartment is beautifully detailed and includes the Dunlap wheel wrench and hammer. The drivetrain is quiet and powerful and performed well even in the 100-degree Fahrenheit weather in Phoenix.

298AJS comes with a significant file of its history from new. Please review the 161 photos in the photo gallery on the Classic Promenade website or review the three videos showing the detail about 298AJS.

For more information and details, please call or text Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com. The Rolls is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom. We are pleased to offer FaceTime or WhatsApp live video inspections and we help coordinate shipping worldwide. We also have financing partners if you are interested in financing.

SALE PENDING to Portugal!! This is a gorgeous 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Saloon with Division by Thrupp & Maberly of London (160MS) that has been thoroughly restored and maintained and is perfect for touring or show. The design features its low profile raked windshield and close coupled passenger compartment, which look fantastic on this long wheelbase chassis. Having been restored as needed over the years and very well maintained and serviced, this Phantom II is ready to be enjoyed.

This Rolls was ordered on October 6, 1932, by Auto Auctions Ltd for William H. McAlpine and its chassis was completed and delivered to Thrupp & Maberly in London on December 22, 1932. Thrupp & Maberly was a highly respected coachbuilder advertising the fact that they were popular coachbuilders to the Royal Family. The Rolls was completed on February 23, 1933 and was delivered to McAlpine on June 2, 1933. The ownership history is quite complete and includes several notable owners including Colonel Sir Henry Ferryman Bowles, First Baronet, MP who was the first President of the Middlesex County Automobile Club.

By 1991 through 1994, 160MS was owned by Peter Vernon Kell of Surry. Mr. Kell commissioned a comprehensive restoration down to its bare chassis. In 2001, Mr. Kell commissioned Derek Skilton of East Sussex to re-trim the interior. The engine had a lower end engine rebuild, radiator restored, and the chassis re-wired in 2004 by the Rolls-Royce specialist at McKenzie Guppy Ltd in Dorset. By 2020, Mr. James Rice acquired the Phantom II from Vintage & Prestige Cars in Northampton, England and had it shipped to Beverly Hills, CA. Mr. Rice commissioned a top engine rebuild, new Llamar wheel discs and a new clutch installed in 2023. 160MS is now ready for touring or concours events.

The livery is in two tone Black and Burgundy that is in very good condition with excellent shine and luster. High use areas, such as near the hood and doors show some wear, but overall it is simply stunning. The Burgundy has a very slight luminescence that is only perceptible with direct sunlight, when it surprisingly comes to life. The chrome and stainless are in excellent condition. The polished Llamar wheel discs are new as are the new black walled Michelin tires. The everflex covered trunk is a fantastic look, making this elegant motorcar appear more as a sportscar. The distance from the windshield to the front of the iconic Rolls-Royce grill is about six feet, which is nearly the same length of the passenger compartment. The height of the center of the windshield is about 11 inches. These design proportions really hint towards a racy and sexy sports saloon. Thrupp & Maberly really got the design right.

The interior is in overall excellent condition with its soft and supple Burgundy pleated Leather for the chauffeurs compartment, complemented with Burgundy Wilton wool carpeting and gorgeous burl wood and straight grained wood. There is some milking in the finish of the wood only in the front door cap panels. The Burgundy leather front door panels feature a starburst design that is reminiscent of art deco. The dashboard has a beautiful display of instruments and switches, including a wonderful Bakelite cigar lighter. The rear passenger compartment features soft and supple Cream Leather pleated hides and cream silk headlining. The Burgundy Wilton wool carpeting is nearly as new. The wood in the rear compartment is nearly perfect as well and is simply stunning. 160MS also features beautiful grab handles and mirrored vanities with cigar lighters. The rear door panels are Cream leather and also feature the stunning starburst design.

The engine compartment is detailed for show and is fantastic, showing the incredible advances in engineering that Rolls-Royce had made by 1933. The venerable 7.7 liter (468 cid) pushrod-OHV straight six was a refined version of the New Phantom (PI) with a new crossflow cylinder head. Synchromesh had been added to third and fourth gears making for a much more refined driving experience. This engine and the cooling system have all been rebuilt and are in excellent condition. The massive weight and long wheelbase of 150 inches makes for a wonderful ride quality. This Rolls comes complete with four decades of restoration, service and maintenance receipts, historical documents, old registrations and more.

For more information and details, call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or sales@classicpromenade.com. See our 172 photos and three videos on our website to learn more. This Phantom is available for viewing at our Phoenix showroom. We are pleased to offer FaceTime or WhatsApp live video inspections and we help coordinate shipping worldwide. We also have financing partners if you are interested in financing.

This is a beautiful example of the iconic 1935 Rolls-Royce Phantom II HJ Mulliner Sports Limousine that wears an older restoration and is a proven tour car. While this Phantom has been made a formidable touring car, it remains cosmetically nice enough for most concours. This Phantom (43TA) is well documented and has been upgraded with power steering, which improves its drivability and makes it a joy to drive. 43TA was also ordered with the overdrive gearing specific to Continental chassis. This Rolls-Royce is featured in Lawrence Dalton’s “Those Elegant Rolls Royce” published in 1997.

43TA was delivered new to 24-year-old American Robert Sweeny at his residence at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London on March 23, 1935. Robert Sweeny was a businessman and Oxford graduate. He went on to win the 1937 British Amateur Golf Championship. His career stalled when he was beaten by Arnold Palmer on the last hole of the US Amateur Golf Championship in 1954, the match that launched Palmer’s golfing stardom. It was specially ordered when new with its kneeling lady mascot, which had been first introduced in January of 1934.

After Sweeny’s ownership, this Phantom enjoyed a documented series of owners in the UK and by the 1960s was on the East Coast of the USA. It eventually came into the ownership of Dr. Mirkhani of Connecticut. Following a thorough restoration under his ownership in the early 1980s it was returned to the UK in the ownership of classic car enthusiast and avid rally participant, John Sangster.

In 1991 it was sought out and acquired by Sir James Cayzer, flamboyant scion of a shipping empire, friend of the Queen Mother and collector of early Rolls Royce cars. Sir James had known this Rolls-Royce during the Sweeny ownership and returned the car to its original paint and interior specifications. During Sir James ownership, in 2005 the car had a complete and documented engine rebuild by Milford Engineering. In addition, the power steering was installed, making for a wonderful driving experience. When Sir James died in early 2012 his collection was sold off, at which time the current owner bought the car. The car still bears Sir James’ family crest on the rear doors.

The current owner, Mr. John Tulloch, purchased the car for touring in the USA, including the successful completion of the 26th Annual Arizona Copperstate Rally in 2016, a grueling trip of 1,000 miles in four days.

The livery is beautiful in its elegant Steel Dusk (Gray) and Black two-tone paint, Black Ace Wheel covers and black walled Firestone tires. The paint has beautiful shine and luster and has many areas of small touched up chips from normal use. The chrome and stainless steel are in overall very nice condition, with wear evident in the high use areas such as the wheel hubs. This close-coupled Phantom has some appealing styling touches and nicely finished throughout. It has Marchal headlamps, louvered bonnet and scuttle, and twin side-mounted spare wheels with fitted covers. We love the sleek design and its nicely raked and low-cut windscreen and its bustle back trunk.

The interior features a beautiful light blue leather in very nice condition. There are no rips or tears and the soft leather is not worn. The carpeting is a wonderful lighter blue Wilton wool in very nice condition. The rear passenger compartment has two cigar vanities and the picnic tables have two vanities built in, one for cosmetics (beveled mirror included) and the other appropriate for a humidor. In addition, there are two additional vanity compartments in both of the rear C-pillar posts. These include doors, mirrors and small compartments for notepads, pencils and the like. The beautiful curved lines on the interior wood door cap panels and matching leather lines of the piping give this a great art deco appeal.

Mechanically, the Phantom II has been thoroughly restored by some of the top engineers specializing in Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Overall, it is in very nice mechanical condition, having benefitted from its earlier thorough restoration. The power steering is well engineered and installed in the UK and make an incredible difference in the driving experience. Sharp cornering is very easy, as is turning the wheel while stationary (normally very difficult to do). 43TA was ordered new with the high-speed Continental gearing for higher speed driving and touring. These enhancements make this Phantom much more agile to drive and makes it even pleasurable around town. 43TA is freshly serviced and ready for use. We did find that the clock and fuel gauge were not functioning, and that the speedometer wobbles. Otherwise, she is in great condition for tours and driving. The engine compartment is in nice show condition and chassis looks as an older restoration with several thousand enjoyable miles added since.

This car comes with a very extensive history, receipts, documentation, and two versions of the owner’s manual, one for shop use and one for show. It has its wheel wrench and a full compliment of tools, but is without its original tool tray.

This is a fantastic 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II with incredibly sophisticated Park Ward DHC stylized coachwork that has been fully restored and enjoyed across three different continents. It has been restored by some of the leading Rolls-Royce engineers in the UK and Australia. As incredible and formidable as it looks, this drives even better with awesome power and relatively docile handling. This is a truly exciting Phantom II.

137GY comes with approximately 200 pages of history, receipts, documentation and photos. Rarely is a motorcar so well documented. She was originally bodied as a Barker Pullman Limousine for Mrs. C H Palethorpe and was delivered on the 13th of February 1931 (Thus, this 1930 Rolls is titled as a 1931). It comes complete with its original UK Registration Books that chronicles its use and ownership in the UK from 1931 through 1966. Thereafter, she was imported into the US, supported by numerous letters, receipts, registrations and other documents from its owners in California. Mr. Robert Payne of Sutter Creek, CA owned it in the early 1970’s and then by 1977 she was sold to Judge Thomas Caldwell of San Mateo, CA.

Judge Caldwell sold the Phantom II to Mr. Roger Fry of Perth, Australia in October of 1986. Mr. Fry was looking for a nice original Phantom II to make his dream car: a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Park Ward DHC. Park Ward had made a famous Phantom II Fixed Head Coupe in this configuration on chassis number 195GY, but not a Drop Head Coupe. This chassis being 137GY would be the correct time period for such a body, and the workmanship is incredible. It is rare to see such complex and sophisticated craftsmanship on a rebodied motorcar.

After its restoration and over two decades of use in Australia and the UK, 137GY was mechanically restored by Harding Auto Service and Fiennes Restoration Ltd, in the UK during 2016 and 2017. In our files is approximately $90,000 of receipts for this major mechanical restoration. During this time, the restorers acquired a new replacement cylinder head, and restored the fuel system, brakes, suspension and electrical. In short, it is today an incredible driving car with fantastic power and capable of high-speed touring.

Overall, 137GY has a consistent patina of a Rolls that has been restored over 30 years ago. Whilst it would always be welcome at nearly every concours event in the world, she is really meant for touring first and showing second.

The Dark Blue livery is today in wonderful touring condition. It has incredible shine and luster but also has many touched up scratches and some minor blemishes. These are only evident upon close inspection. The chrome and stainless are also in overall nice condition, but still consistent with a touring car. The bare aluminum wheel discs really pop against the dark blue and ominous Dunlap 20 inch blackwalled tires. The black canvas convertible top is simple to raise and lower, and the top boot fits snugly and well. The are a couple of small imperfections on the top and the boot cover, but nothing highly noticeable or to reduce their function. There is a black trunk in the rear that is beautifully designed for the car, and looks just right. This trunk is large enough to store all the necessary spares, books and tools needed for a tour, and then some.

The interior is a lovely gray leather with contrasting dark blue wool carpeting with gray leather binding. The leather is soft and supple and without any tears, and the carpeting is also in nice condition. The original dash is beautifully outfitted with all the necessary instruments, which function well. The wood dash and cap rails along the doors and passenger compartment are all in beautiful condition. The seating position is excellent, no matter how tall you are there is ample room in the front seats of the passenger compartment.

The engine compartment is well detailed and the engine is the correct original, engine no. MW 25. Even the distributor bears the MW 25 designation. The 7.7 liter inline six-cylinder has incredible power that is delivered through its four-speed manual transmission. It is surprising how well 137GY handles with its 150” wheelbase. The front end feels very light and very responsive, thanks to all of the mechanical restoration over the past several years.

This Phantom II comes complete with all of the historical documentation mentioned before, large tools, owner’s manuals and more.

For more information and details, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or sales@classicpromenade.com. 137GY is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom.

This is a beautiful example of a fully restored 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Limousine deVille with gorgeous lines and styling executed by the craftsmen at Gurney Nutting. This is a multiple award winning Rolls that is in beautiful condition today. It’s history is as fascinating as its design, including being ordered new by Gracie Fields and owned and enjoyed by Brittan’s elite.

Records indicate that Phantom II chassis number 55TA was ordered by Gracie Fields through London Rolls-Royce dealer H.R. Owen on October 2nd, 1934. The chassis was dispatched to coachbuilder Gurney Nutting on January 10th, 1935, and it took approximately three months before the car was complete and ready for delivery. The car’s history has been confirmed through documents supplied by the Rolls Royce archive (See our photo gallery and our documents folders).

Dame Gracie Fields was a legendary British actress/singer/comedienne. On February 15th, 1938, she was honored with the “Commander of the Order of the British Empire” medal from King George VI: http://graciefields.org/wordpress/commander-of-the-british-empire/ more Gracie Fields history is included here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gracie_Fields

Ms. Fields enjoyed the Rolls and later sold it to “His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury” (the largest private landowner in Europe having amassed 280,000 acres). The Rolls was owned by the Duke’s family from 1936 until 1948 and was kept at the incredible Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland: http://www.drumlanrigcastle.co.uk/the-castle/the-douglases-and-drumlanrig/ The Duke’s uncle had been the Chairman of Rolls-Royce (he commissioned the original “Spirit of Ecstasy”mascot). His cousin was Lord Montagu of Beaulieu who founded the National Motor Museum at his family estate in Hampshire. Here is the Duke’s family tree: http://www.drumlanrigcastle.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Montagu-Douglas-Scotts-Family-Tree-PDF.pdf

One of the two videos shown on is of this Rolls being used to deliver the bride at the wedding of Lady Elizabeth Diana Montagu-Douglas-Scott, aunt of the current Duke, to the Duke of Northumberland at Westminster Abbey. Members of the Royal Family were among the guests at the wedding of the Duke of Northumberland and Lady Elizabeth Montagu-Douglas-Scott. In attendance were: Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, and Queen Mary, the Queen Mother, and King George, and the Duchess of Kent.

The Duke sold the Rolls in 1948 to a Rolls-Royce hire service at 21 Cromwell Mews, Kensington, where it was mainly used for weddings and other special occasions. It was eventually exported to the US (circa 1970) and has been here ever since according to the history on file. A well-known classic car collector (and lifetime member of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club) named Gordon Dysart bought the car and embarked on a restoration to bring the car back to its former glory. At the time, Gracie Fields ran a small hotel and restaurant on Capri catering to celebrities, and Mr. Dysart actually travelled to the island to visit her and ask for information on the car. She supplied him further details on original colors and materials to help add authenticity to the restoration.

A complete frame-off concours restoration was performed, and this “Full Classic” car earned both CCCA & AACA Senior First Place awards. After the restoration, the car was shown numerous times and was always maintained and properly stored. Although the restoration was performed some time ago, the car is still in quite beautiful condition with a consistent patina throughout. It almost appears to be a well-kept original rather than a restored car.

The livery is very elegant in a two tone blue, with the color break being done in a manner that accentuates the curvaceous Gurney Nutting design. The paint is in very nice condition with only a few areas showing its age via some fine cracking. The chrome and stainless is overall in very nice condition. The P100 headlamps are perfect for the stature of this Rolls. We love the art deco design of the door handles.

The interior is black leather in the chauffeurs compartment and blue wool broadcloth in the passengers compartment. The upholstery in both areas are in very nice condition and need nothing. The wood for the dashboard could benefit from refinishing as it has noticeable cracking in the finish coating. The wood veneer appears fine. Under the drivers compartment seat is the incredibly complete set of tools for the Rolls.

Mechanically, the Phantom II is in very nice condition, having benefitted from its earlier restoration. It runs and drives well and the 158-point inspection report is available on our website listing page. The engine compartment and chassis are nicely detailed as shown in the photo gallery.

This is a very impressive car with a history described by several marque specialists as “superb”. This sale includes the complete fitted tool set, history, and documentation.

This is an incredible opportunity to acquire an important and beautiful Phantom II. For more information and details, call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or email at sales@classicpromenade.com. The Rolls is available to view at our Phoenix showroom.
