This 1947 Packard Custom Super Clipper represents the pinnacle of Packard’s postwar luxury, with its elegant design and rare survivor-quality mileage showing just over 28,000 miles. Finished in Vanderbilt Gray Metallic and featuring a beautifully restored interior, this Packard offers a balance of originality and tasteful refreshment. With its stately lines, smooth Packard straight-eight power, and low-mileage pedigree, it stands as an excellent candidate for weekend cruising, casual touring, or as the foundation for a higher-level restoration.

First sold in the immediate postwar era and registered in January 1947, this Packard has led a well-preserved life with relatively few miles added over its nearly eight decades. While complete ownership history is not fully documented, the current owner obtained the Super Clipper in 2016 and is providing extensive maintenance and restoration receipts. The mileage suggests this Packard was sparingly used, likely as a treasured automobile kept out of daily duty for much of its existence. Its history of preservation, along with the restored interior and original features, provides the next owner a solid platform that can be enjoyed today while offering room for further cosmetic enhancements.

The exterior is finished in Vanderbilt Gray Metallic, a period-correct Packard color that complements the car’s imposing presence. The paint shows as some respray with areas that will benefit from touch-up or attention, allowing a new owner to decide whether to preserve the current finish or invest in a concours-level refinishing. Chrome and stainless trim present well overall, while minor imperfections in the finish reflect its age. This example remains complete and visually striking, ideal for local shows or relaxed weekend outings.

Inside, the cabin has been beautifully restored by the current owner in rich blue fabric with crème-colored piping, presenting a striking contrast against the Metallic Gray exterior. The Carpathian Elm Burled wood accent trim, flanked by Carpathian Elm Straight woodgraining on the door caps, is beautifully placed throughout the cabin. Front and reach bench seats and carpets are in excellent condition with Packard branded front floor mats. The steering wheel was custom-built to match the period-correct style. The dash remains highly original, and may benefit from restoration, which presents an opportunity for the next caretaker to complete the car to a higher level of finish. Overall, the interior offers both comfort and elegance, highlighting the craftsmanship for which Packard was known.

Under the hood, the Packard is powered by its 356-cubic-inch straight-eight engine paired to a column-shift 3-speed manual transmission. Renowned for smooth and reliable performance, this drivetrain was Packard’s top offering of the era. While no major recent mechanical restorations are noted, the car runs and drives nicely, and is well-positioned to provide many more miles of classic motoring enjoyment. The 1947 Packard Custom Super Clipper exudes timeless postwar elegance as a dignified cruiser that rewards both the collector’s eye and the driver’s touch.

This is a stunning example of the iconic 1947 Packard Custom Super Clipper that has been fully restored and has been an award winner as well as a tour veteran. This Packard has been heavily involved in the Southern California Packard scene for the last two decades. It has been awarded the coveted Circle of Champions from Packard’s International and has been continually upgraded since.

The livery is finished in the rare and gorgeous Vanderbilt Grey with beautifully refinished chrome throughout. The Firestone wide white wall tires, stainless trim rings and cloisonné medallions all compliment the Grey exterior. The exterior paint is in excellent show condition. There is a small area on the drivers side fender with some small sub-surface reaction under the paint. It is hardly noticeable except upon close inspection (which is our role). The balance of the paint is really excellent with nice panel fit and well polished for show. The chrome, as mentioned previously, is excellent overall throughout. The classic Packard hubcaps have a few small dings, likely being original rather than reproductions. Again, no noticeable flaws are visible without close inspection.

The interior is perhaps the most gorgeous interior for the Post-War era. The beautiful maroon interior is complimented with beige piping throughout. The interior has been completely and thoroughly restored, with perhaps the exception of the dashboard, which appears to have been coated over the years to preserve it, in-place. The exceptional wool mosstred carpeting is a masterpiece of Packard elegance. The unique feature of the Custom Super Clipper is the headliner, which bows runs the from the front to the back, rather than side to side as with all other cars. This Packard features the radio, dual heaters, the Packard fog lights and the reverse light.

The venerable 356 CID straight eight is the heart and soul of the Packard’s. It is arguably the best engine that Packard ever produced. With nine main bearings, 165 HP and fantastic reliability, it is truly a wonder for its day. This engine has been completely rebuilt, including all of its ancillary pieces. Some of the best experts in Packard have helped in the restoration of this car. The three speed with overdrive transmission has been rebuilt by Cy Benyamin. The rear end, brakes, suspension and literally every aspect of the drivetrain have been completely rebuilt.

According to the data plate, this Packard was sold new on March 31, 1947 at the Packard Lancaster dealership in Lancaster, PA. By 2002, it was acquired by Dr. Darryl Killian in the Santa Barbara area. Dr. Killian commenced the restoration and allowing it to earn the Circle of Champions from Packard’s International in 2007. This is PI’s highest honors for its annual concours event. Included in the sale is about $40,000 worth of restoration receipts, which is but a fraction of the total investment in this gorgeous example. On July 23, 2017, Dr. Killian had passed and the ownership of the Super Clipper was transferred to Dr. Jay Ball. Dr. Ball is well known within Packard circles as having restored some of the nicest and most perfect Packard’s extant. Dr. Ball improved the Packard and helped it become what it is today.

Every part of the drivetrain, from the venerable 356 CID nine main bearing straight eight engine to its three speed with overdrive transmission, has been professionally rebuilt. This includes the front end, brakes, suspension, rear end and more. This is a beautifully driving Packard, as a Custom Super Clipper should be!

If you are looking for an exceptional example of a 1947 Packard Custom Super Clipper sedan, this may be the car for you. Whether to enjoy long distance tours or to show, this is a wonderful car.

For more details and information, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or sales@classicpromenade.com. The Packard is available for viewing in our Phoenix showroom.

SOLD to Pasadena, CA!! This is a very rare California rust-free 1946 Packard Clipper Deluxe Club Sedan.

We love the sexy and sleek styling of the Club Sedans. And this one is painted in a very striking two-tone of Laguna Maroon metallic complimented with a French Gray metallic on the upper section. We especially love the skirted fenders and the sun visor. Giving this the classic Packard look for the post-War period.

Most of the chrome has been re-plated and looks great. The two rear bumper wings could benefit from re-plating, otherwise the cosmetics are very nice. This is really a tour car that would be welcomed at most all car shows and regional concours events. But it is not meant to be a show car. This is a nice driving Packard that is meant to be driven and enjoyed. The odometer is showing 30,000 miles.

This was sold new in 1946 in Los Angeles by the famous Earl C Anthony dealership. It stayed in California through its life until we purchased it a few months ago. The previous owners restored much of the car, rebuilding the 288 cu in straight eight and doing a cosmetic restoration.

The interior is done very well in modern gray materials. The look is great and it is very practical for touring and use. For show it is not the correct wool broadcloth, but no one but a Packard guru would likely know the difference anyway! The door surrounds are still in the original form and need to be refinished, most likely in the body color (similar to the dashboard). These are incredibly rare, especially the Club Sedans.

More details will be coming. The Packard is in our Phoenix showroom and is available for inspection. For more information, please call or text Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com.
