The 1942 Packard Super Eight One Eighty Rollson All-Weather Town Car is among the rarest and most desirable semi-custom Packards ever produced, representing the final chapter of Packard’s cataloged coachbuilt offerings. Built on the top-tier One Eighty chassis and powered by the exceptional 356-cubic-inch straight-eight, this Packard combines formal luxury with chauffeur-driven presence. Chassis 15502043 presents today as a beautifully mellowed, fully restored Full Classic with patina consistent with careful preservation. This Packard is ideal for tours, marque events, or as a standout entry at CCCA, AACA, or Packard club gatherings, where its extreme rarity guarantees attention.

This Packard was completed in December 1941 and believed to be the final cataloged Packard town car. It is quite possibly the last cataloged Packard body style produced. The All-Weather Town Car was originally delivered new to the Cory family of New York, known for their innovations in the coffee percolator industry. Three examples were built at a price of $4,975, making the model accessible only to the most affluent buyers as America entered wartime production. The Packard has since passed through discerning owners, including a comprehensive seven-year restoration in the 1980s under Wyatt Peterson, who fabricated difficult-to-source components at a time when parts availability was limited. The Packard was acquired 2023 by the current owner who invested in further preservation and maintenance adding fewer than 250 miles with current mileage showing 42,565 miles.

The exterior of the Packard presents in red with burgundy accents complete with the distinctive black leather covered hardtop which are in very good overall condition. The Packard has dual covered sidemounts, wide whitewall tires, and the original folding chrome luggage rack. The correct removable black canvas chauffeur top is in very good condition. Expected rock chips and minor wear on the running boards reflect normal use, while the body lines, trim, lenses, and formal proportions remain visually striking. All exterior lighting functions properly. The Packard maintains the dignified, authentic appearance from Rollson coachbuilder and would be welcome at local and regional shows!

The chauffeur’s compartment is trimmed in black leather paired with brown short-pile carpeting. The interior is in overall good condition from normal wear and use over the years with the front seat showing one tear and there is some fraying on the carpet. The instrument panel retains its Packard enamel emblem steering wheel and chrome trim with the original AM radio in place but nonfunctional. A secondary oil pressure gauge has been installed since the one on the dash does not work. The passenger compartment remains elegant in tan broadcloth with well-preserved jump seats, footrests, and attractive walnut trim, though the anterior vent panels show deterioration. The division glass is present, though its power mechanism operates inconsistently. Power windows function on the driver’s side, and the cabin retains working dome lighting on one side as well as functional heater and defrost systems.

Powered by Packard’s 356-cubic-inch straight-eight rated at 165 horsepower, the Packard retains the smooth and confident performance for which the One Eighty series is renowned. The column controlled three-speed manual transmission shifts cleanly, complimented by the Borg-Warner overdrive unit option, providing a higher gear ratio for highway cruising at lower engine speeds. The four-wheel drum brakes are in good working condition, and recent servicing included a fuel pump assembly replacement in July 2025. There is a 6V battery with the cutoff switch conveniently located under the driver’s seat. The mechanical presentation reflects long-term preservation following the earlier frame-off restoration, making this an excellent candidate for continued touring or club events.

Includes original Packard owner’s manual, partial maintenance, restoration and ownership records, some tools and small parts.

This 1940 Packard Darrin is one of the last true Darrin Packard’s produced. It was produced in March of 1940 and delivered to Ms. Catherine Tyne, of Nashville Tennessee, the young daughter of well-known Tennessee attorney and former candidate for Governor Thomas Tyne. This is one of 44 produced and approximately 32 remaining.

As a well-known socialite and bachelorette at the time, the Packard Darrin was quite the statement, even for a woman of means such as Ms. Tyne. When the Nashville dealer, E. Gray Smith, brought the car to the family home, Ms. Tyne was smitten.

Catherine Tyne owned the car until 1950, when she married. Her husband would not permit her to keep the Packard, as it was a representation of her “single life”, and she soon sold the Darrin to a young man working at their country club, who was enamored with the car. Cars, gasoline, and particularly tires being expensive and sometimes hard to find at the time, the young man decided to sell the car soon after, and Frank Waterhouse became the next lucky owner.

Waterhouse enjoyed his ownership of the car through the 1950’s, showing it at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during this time period. It was also during this period that the distinctive dashboard shown in the present photos was installed, a 1938 V-12 dashboard donated from a Packard limousine. This dashboard became synonymous with this particular car as an in-period addition that added to the charm and usability of “#2012”. Waterhouse also brought the Darrin back to the Packard agency that originally sold the car for a photo shoot before he left Nashville for Pasadena, California.

During his ownership, the Darrin was featured in Road and Track in May, 1955, in the legendary Salon section, along with other significant Packard motorcars. Although the article gave a fantastic synopsis of the car, it also stated that this particular Darrin was produced in Hollywood. That information was incorrect. The car was produced in Connersville, Indiana.

When he was tragically killed in an automobile accident (not in the Packard), his administrator, a man named Malone, sold the car to Janard Loken, who owned #2012 into 1960’s.

Under the ownership of Janard Loken, the overdrive in the transmission was installed, and the Darrin was enjoyed on quite a few tours and CCCA Caravans, where it was certainly in its element. After his passing, Loken’s wife sold the car to a couple in New Jersey in the late 1960’s, where it remained until 1974, when it changed hands once again to Robert Kaufmann.

Under Kaufmann’s ownership the Darrin was driven but not shown at any concours or even local events, save for an outing in the late 1990’s at Hershey.

As you can see from some of the photos of the Darrin throughout the years, the wheels were changed for a time to 15-inch wheels, owing to the fact that 16-inch tires were nearly impossible to source. The original wheels were (thankfully) kept with the car and eventually re-installed with the original hubcaps and wheel covers when 16-inch tires became widely available again.

The last caretaker of the car, before the current female owner, was a gentleman from the southwest who chased the car for more than 28 years. During his long tenure of ownership, he re-built the motor from top to bottom, being careful to save and preserve all of the originality of the finishes and history.

And as a note to the originality of the car, it is evident from the “not so careful” welds around places such as the radiator that were left in place by the caretakers of the Darrin throughout the years. There were also a few braces installed by early owners of the Darrin to alleviate the front end shaking, as the early cars were prone to exhibit.

The present condition of #2012 is what most collectors would deem wonderfully and correctly preserved. While the car has been painted to the original factory Packard Maroon and the tan canvas convertible top replaced at some point many years ago, the gorgeous maroon leather interior is in very nice original condition, with the red carpets being replaced at some point.

The Darrin has never actually been taken apart and subjected to a full restoration, which at this point is a blessing. The engine, which is of course original to the car, was rebuilt approximately 20 years ago by the last owner and exhibits the proper compression ratio. The non-factory braces mentioned earlier, installed shortly after the Darrin’s delivery, are still in place, as well as many of the factory welds and other evidence of originality.

One of the interesting aspects of the performance side of the #2012 is that the engine has the near mythical Edmunds dual carburetor set up and the special alloy finned cylinder head installed (we’ve never seen these in real life before!). The set up was very likely installed by Jared Loken in the 1960’s, who was also the owner responsible for installing the overdrive in the transmission, making #2012 not only more roadable, but faster as well. The correct and original intake and carburetor set up was also preserved through the years and will be included with the sale.

Another very significant feature of #2012 are the Marchal head lights and trip lights. Due to the significant French influence of Darrin’s designs, this car had period Marchal head lights and trip lights installed, most likely early in its life, if not at the factory by special order, to accent its European appeal. They add a certain flair to the already beautifully designed front end.

As any Darrin aficionado already knows, these early Darrin Packard’s (through 1940) are special in and of themselves, not just because of their looks, but because they were among the last truly hand-built and truly custom cars to come out of the United States. The later Darrin Packard’s, while still very special in their own right, used more standard Packard parts and had a different look to them. The early cars, such as #2012, exhibited the true French styling that Howard “Dutch” Darrin strove to achieve on an American chassis. And in that exercise, he succeeded wonderfully.

#2012 comes complete with full documentation and is ready to drive and enjoy, or she can be shown at any concours event. The engine compartment and chassis are fully detailed. As a Super Eight 180, she has her venerable 356 CID straight eight with nine main bearings. This is one of the best engines Packard ever developed.

For more information and detail, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or sales@classicpromenade.com. She can be viewed at the owner’s home in the Chicagoland area.

SOLD!! Off to Washington State!! The 1941 Packard 180 LeBaron Sport Brougham is widely considered to be one of the best looking pre-war sedans ever made. This example benefited from a no-expense spared restoration that is one of the best we’ve ever seen. And it drives as well as it looks, with every detail functioning and behaving as it should. And with less than 100 made and about 20 extant, it is one of the most desired models available. This Packard would easily be a contender at any of the major concours events, including Pebble Beach and Amelia Island.

Highlights:
-One of Approximately 99 Built
-Impressive Restoration
-AACA Senior Award Winner in 2018
-CCCA Senior Award Winner in January 2019

Specifications:
-356 CID L-Head Inline 8-Cylinder Engine
-Stromberg Carburetor
-160 BHP at 3,500 RPM
-3-Speed with Overdrive Manual Gearbox
-4-Wheel Hydraulic Drum Brakes
-Independent Front Suspension with Coil Springs
-Live Rear Axle with Semi-Elliptical Leaf Springs
-Wheelbase: 138″
-Power windows

This Packard was purchased new from Broadway Motor Sales in Gloversville, NY on May 24th, 1941. This was one of the most expensive Packard’s available in 1941, so we can imagine it being bought by the owner of one of the many glove making factories just before the US involvement in WWII. The car was more recently owned by Marvin Jelnick from Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. Jelnick was a locksmith and had fastidious attention to detail. He restored it himself and had the engine rebuilt by Rick Enquist, known as one of the best rebuilders of 356 CID eights in country.

The present owner, Keith Ambs from Tucson, Arizona, is one of our consignment clients who has terrific taste in cars. He purchased this motorcar from Tom Crook in May of 2014, trading in his 1941 Cadillac convertible.

The LeBaron Sport Brougham was included in the Packard 180 sales catalog, referred to as a semi-custom. This nomenclature is due to the car being fabricated by marrying a sedan front end and the back end of a curvaceous coupe, making it extremely expensive to build. It then has incredible custom attention to detail.

The designers absolutely nailed it. The proportions are so perfect that from afar one would never know that this is an 18 foot long luxury car. Every line and angle is perfect. From the split veed windshield to the chromed perfectly arched window frames, this is a gorgeous design. But don’t take our word for it, look at the photos and video!

The venerable 356 CID nine main bearing straight eight is iconic. It is an incredibly powerful and dependable and with the three speed overdrive this motorcar is comfortable cruising at 70-80 mph. The brakes were sufficiently refined that highway speeds are relatively safe.

The livery is in Packard Blue and is nearly perfect with the exception of one small area on the driver’s rear fender. The car would benefit from this being repaired. The Packard was ordered with the running boards deleted and without side mounted spares, which make the lines sleek and sexy. This is just the right look for the Sport Brougham.
This Packard is loaded with options including the front and rear bumper guards, fog lights, drivers mirror, radio, heater and hydraulic power windows.

The wool broadcloth interior is absolutely perfect, as are the Wilton wool carpets. The wood work is stunning as well, with the inlay inserts throughout. The wood finishes were only available on the 180 models and the Sport Brougham’s is over the top.

Everything on this car functions perfectly, except the clock isn’t perfectly accurate. Cosmetically, the Packard could benefit from the small paint repair and the plastic coating on the shift lever replaced or repaired.

A very similar Sport Brougham was sold at the 2013 Gooding and Co auction for $176,000. Details here: https://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1941-packard-custom-super-8-one-eighty-sport-brougham/

If you are considering adding an important pre-war Packard to your collection don’t wait. These rarely come to market and this is one of the best in existence. For more details call Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com.

PRICE REDUCED $20,000 on May 1st for fast sale!!!

The 1941 Packard Custom 180 LeBaron Limousine (Model 1420) is one of the rarest and most impressive Packards of the later Pre-War period. This example is a combination of original and sympathetic restoration showing a consistent and elegant patina throughout. To this day it wins awards at concours events.

In 1941 Packard offered several semi-custom bodies. The LeBaron Limousine was the most elegant, being offered on the 148 inch wheelbase. What is incredible is the sheer size of the motorcar. The design is so well executed that the sheer size of the limousine eludes your first glance.

History of this LeBaron
The original owner was Mary L. Griggs, the wife of Theodore W. Griggs, then President of Griggs Cooper and Co. a St. Paul, Minnesota food and manufacturing firm. Mrs. Griggs was a founder of the Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. Their estate is called the Burbank Livingston Griggs House on Summit Ave. and is open to the public.

The Packard was beautifully professionally restored in the late 1960’s. It was then awarded its Senior Award badge, No. 0831, at the Annual Meeting of the Classic Car Club of America. The condition of the car today is much the same as when it was awarded the Senior Award.

The present owners of the Packard showed it at the 2008 La Jolla Motor Car Classic and was an award recipient. In addition, it was honored to be included in the Packard’s International Circle of Champions during the 2010 Packard Grand Salon held at the Rancho Bernardo Winery in CA.

Condition of the Motorcar
The Packard’s livery is painted in Laguna Maroon metallic. The paint is lustrous and looks wonderful on the car. There are several areas where cracking has developed, but overall it has a very consistent patina (we have highlighted these areas in numerous photos in the photo gallery). These are mainly in the areas where the body was welded together. The coachbuilders used lead instead of body fillers and the lead over several decades causes the cracking. There are a couple of small areas where the paint is wearing thin. These are only noticeable upon close inspection.

The chrome, wheel covers and stainless steel trim are in gorgeous condition and are likely original. This would make sense as the Limousine was chauffer driven and maintained until it was deemed an important classic, at which time it was a show and touring car with the Classic Car Club of America.

The interior is a wonderful blend of gorgeous tan wool broadcloth, a variety of elegant highly polished wood trim and Wilton wool carpeting. The rear seats, headliner and door panels are original. The two jump seats are as new and the rear seat passenger has a buzzer to communicate with the chauffer. The driver’s compartment is trimmed in black leather.

The luggage compartment still has the original horsehair and is in excellent condition. The dashboard woodgraining is as new and all of the trim and chrome on the dashboard and steering wheel are in beautiful condition.

As one would expect from the most expensive model available, this LeBaron limousine has most options that were available in 1941. The windows and division window are hydraulic, it has the in-dash radio, driver’s side spotlight, dual front driving lights, accessory bumper guards in the front and rear and dual sidemounts.

In 2008, we personally prepared the LeBaron for 1,500 mile Classic Car Club CARavan’s. The scope of the restoration work included rebuilding the front end, new Diamondback wide white wall radial tires, completely detailing and painting the undercarriage, complete detail of the engine compartment and rebuilding various components such as the complete hydraulics for the windows, brakes, carburetor, generator, starter, etc. We also completely lined the interior flooring with heat reflective foil insulation to make the Packard more comfortable for touring in more temperate climates.

At the heart of this great Packard is its drivetrain. The fabulous nine main bearing 356 cu in straight-eight engine is a legend in motoring history. Delivering 165 BHP and nearly unlimited torque, it delivers smooth and powerful driving that is completely dependable. You will not find a smoother starting or running 356 cu in Packard. It is quieter than any other we’ve heard, just as one would expect from a Packard senior eight. Also added to the Packard is an electronically activated Gear Vendors over-drive which makes long distance highway touring comfortable and safe for the motorcar.

There are only six LeBaron limousines known extant making this one of the rarest models of Packard. This would be a wonderful addition to any collection and a fabulous opportunity to acquire a car for either touring or show.
