SALE PENDING!! This beautiful left-hand drive (LHD) 1954 Bentley R-Type Standard Steel Saloon (body no. 6891) is a wonderful driving example that can be enjoyed on tours and regional concours events. This R-Type was ordered new with many specific specifications for temperate climates and includes the desirable automatic transmission and sunroof. This is the later “Big Boot” and big bore model with the larger trunk, dual exhaust and larger more powerful engine. In total, this makes for a very comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.

This Bentley was custom ordered in December of 1953 and was delivered to its original owner in the Middle East in March of 1954. Special features were added to accommodate the climate and conditions of the region. The suspension was tailored for maximum shock damping and springing. The roof was padded with extra insulation for the high temperatures. A heavy-duty air cleaner was added to manage the dust from the roads. Sundym glass was installed throughout to reflect the sunlight and keep the inside of the car cooler.

The two previous owners and longtime RROC members and have enjoyed the Bentley for at least the last 52 years. Mr. Robert Goff of Little Rock, AR acquired the Bentley at least by 1971. The history file has numerous letters to Rolls-Royce and many invoices as well. By 1991, Dr. Ronald Winters from Little Rock, AR acquired the Bentley and enjoyed it until 2022. The last owner is also an RROC member, Mr. Greg Nolan of Palm Springs. The Bentley was traded in toward a gorgeous Silver Cloud. Mr. Nolan invested over $30,000 over the past two years rebuilding the automatic transmission, five new blackwall radial tires, new brake drums, brake master and wheel cylinders, rebuilding the brake servo, new rear shocks and electronic ignition, to highlight some of the service work.

The striking Claret and Black livery has wonderful depth and shine and is complemented by the new black wall Coker Classic radials and its brilliant chrome and stainless trim. The paint has a beautiful, rich finish, and has been fully color sanded and polished. The paint has wonderful shine and luster. Red pinstriping has been applied and looks terrific. The chrome on the bumpers and grill surround are in particularly lovely condition, although there is some pitting in the center taillight chrome. The Bentley comes with a driver’s side rear-view mirror, dual fender mounted mirrors, a correct period spotlight and auxiliary fog lights. We love the very large sunroofs featured on these later R-Types. (We have over 160 photos, three videos and more on our Classic Promenade website)

The interior overall shows very well. The wood trim is in overall good condition showing some patina. The newer burgundy leather interior is equally as nice and is very soft and supple. There is very minor superficial creasing in the burgundy leather. The Wilton wool carpets are in good condition, with slight shrinkage and wear by the driver’s heel pad. The steering wheel is good but has many small cracks. The picnic tables are in excellent condition.

This Bentley R-type features the later larger displacement 4.6 liter straight six with twin SU carburetors, dual exhaust, and can accomplish speeds of over 100 mph and maintain speeds of 70-80 mph on the highway. Mechanically this Bentley is in wonderful driving condition. The car’s 4-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and easily and starts right up. For decades, this Bentley has been garaged and regularly maintained by certified Bentley Mechanics. The chassis and undercarriage are all in good condition, cleaned, detailed and free of rust.

This Bentley comes with a spare tire and jack tool kit with oil gun and tire pump. The small tool tray under the passenger seat is almost complete. She also has her service handbook, owner’s manual, and an extra set of keys. Also included is the file history spanning over 50 years!!

For more information and details, please call or text Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com. This Bentley is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom. We are pleased to offer FaceTime or WhatsApp live video inspections and we help coordinate shipping worldwide. We also have financing partners if you are interested in financing.

This 1954 Bentley R-Type Saloon is known as “Bertie” has been driven and enjoyed for 45,000 miles over the past 12-years by an enthusiastic RROC and DBC member. As a reliable tour car and an award winner at RROC meets, this Bentley has been restored as needed while still retaining many original features. If you are looking for a delightful tour car that can cruise comfortably at 65 miles per hour, Bertie might be a great fit!

Bertie was born as B66WH and was special ordered by The Car Mart, Ltd for CR Millbourn, Esq. for delivery in January 1954. It was imported into the US to Philadelphia in about 1973. It was then acquired by Terry Saxe from Rochester, WA. By about 2011, Bertie had made its way to Surrey, BC, Canada to its present owner, Dave Baron. For the past 13 years, Bertie has been driven regularly on tours and to various shows all over North America. In 2019, Bertie benefited from a complete engine rebuild and in 2022 a complete repaint.

The “Big Boot” R-Types make for wonderful tour cars. The large trunk allows room for luggage, the massive sunroof is a joy and the higher horsepower engine combined with the automatic transmission makes for comfortable touring. The R-Type is not too large nor too small. They love to be driven hard, handle well and are very reliable.

The livery is featured in its original color combination of Midnight Blue over Dove Gray. The recent repaint is beautiful with excellent shine and luster. Overall, the paint and exterior are what we refer to as tour quality but can be proudly displayed at most all concours events. The chrome and stainless-steel trim are original and in very good condition. There is light scratching from use, but overall, it is very nice and presents with a consistent patina. We love the Bridgestone black wall steel belted radial tires next to the Dove Gray wheel covers.

The interior is a blend of original gray leather with Dark Blue contrasting piping. The two front bottom cushions have been refinished in new leather and the color match is spot on. The seats are very comfortable and designed for cross country touring. The original leather is dried and cracked, but still looks good and is consistent in its patina. The newer Dark Blue Wilton wool carpeting has gray leather binding and is in overall very good condition. The massive sunroof opens easily and is a pleasure to enjoy while driving. The burl walnut is in overall good condition. There are portions of cracked finish, but many of the highly visible sections have been refinished and is in nice condition. The instruments work well, but the clock and radio are not working.

The engine compartment detailing is in nice condition. The engine was detailed when it was completely rebuilt in 2019 and looks great today. Many touring advancements include the addition of a spin on oil filter, radials, an electroinc ignition, LED brake and taillights and an auxiliary electric cooling fan (for mountains and traffic). The flashlight is missing from the engine compartment, but replacements are available. The 4.6 liter straight six-cylinder engine produces 130 hp and with its four-speed HydraMatic automatic transmission Bertie is a blast to drive. The engine sounds great with nice power. There is a slight lifter noise at certain RPMs. Its 120-inch wheelbase makes it easy to maneuver and a delight to drive. This Bentley has a wonderful road feel. The RHD steering is very stable and has little play. The chassis is mostly all original and has never really been cleaned or detailed. the Bjur central lubricating system works well, and the rear leather gaiter leave spring covers are newer and in very good condition. It does not have the rot that you often see in UK cars.

Bertie comes complete with many spares, including spare paint, leather dye, detailed service and repair receipts, owner maintenance logs and much more. Included in the sale are the original jack and most of the large tools, the small tools tray with most of the small tools and the original Owner’s Handbook.

Bertie is ready to show, drive and enjoy. For more details and information please call or text Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042 or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com. The Bentley is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom. We are pleased to offer FaceTime or WhatsApp live video inspections and we help coordinate shipping worldwide. We also have financing partners if you are interested in financing.

This 1954 Bentley R-Type has been completely restored as needed to be a spectacular touring car that can be proudly displayed at regional car shows. But, most importantly, the present owner made significant investments to ensure that this is the ultimate long distance touring car by thoroughly rebuilding the engine 15,000 miles ago, adding modern air conditioning and power steering. The result is a sporty and terrific handling Bentley that can readily be enjoyed on 5,000-mile tours! This Bentley is as elegant as it is sporty!

HISTORY: B89YA was delivered new on June 28th, 1954 to A.M. Johnstone, Esq of John Morris Electrical Engineering Co. Ltd. in Bilston. On February 26th, 1955, the Bentley was transferred to James Howden & Co. Ltd. in Glasgow. The Bentley remained under the ownership of the company for 18 years until it was acquired and imported into the US by Paul Woudenberg of Long Beach, CA. Paul Woudenberg was the minister at the First United Methodist Church, Santa Monica, CA where he remained until 1976. Paul Woudenberg was the much-loved Voice of the Pebble Beach Concours for 30 years. Paul was an important presence at the Concours, a charming, wise and witty host.

On November 21, 1972, Paul sold the Bentley to his close friend and neighbor Richard Bell. Richard mentioned to Paul that he was planning to buy a new 1972 Chevy and Paul suggested that Richard buy B89YA for the same amount of money as the Chevy and in 20 years the R-Type Bentley would be worth more. Richard took Paul’s advice and bought B89YA. Richard Bell enjoyed the Bentley for the next 42 years.

The present owner, George Schuetz from Indian Land, SC, acquired B89YA on August 5th, 2014, after having a pre-purchase inspection completed by the renowned Roger Ford. The Bentley had accumulated 61,986 miles from new. Roger Fords inspection resulted in a list of recommended repairs, which were all completed by Ronnies Garage in Santa Ana, CA. Both Roger Ford (deceased) and Ronny Shaver are icons within the RROC.

When Ronny completed the work, George flew to LAX and set off on a 4,600-mile scenic cross-country drive B89YA home. Through much of 2017, George invested $15,000 restoring the upholstery and interior woodwork and about $30,000 to completely and properly rebuild the engine and add the power steering and air conditioning. These improvements transform this Bentley into the ultimate classic tour car!

Since then, George and the Bentley have driven on countless tours, including through Yellowstone National Park and through the Continental Divide at about 8,000-foot elevation. The Bentley has always proven to be a comfortable and dependable motorcar.

CONDIITON: This Bentley was cosmetically restored to its original configuration of Dark Blue with Gray Leather. The Dark Blue livery is in very nice touring condition and is complemented by light blue coach stripes. It has terrific shine and deep luster with light orange peel. There are normal touched up chips in the high use areas which are noticeable upon close inspection. Overall, the paint looks great. The chrome and stainless-steel trim are in very nice condition, with a couple of small dings in the rear bumper. The wide white walled radial tires look terrific with the darker livery. Best of all, as with most R-Type saloons, this Bentley benefits from its huge sunroof which instantly allows for excellent air flow while using the air conditioning or without. The sunroof is nearly large enough to give the sense of open-air driving.

The Gray Leather interior has been redone by its present owner and looks great. The Gray Leather is soft and supple and is in very nice condition. The correct Dark Blue Wilton wool carpeting features gray binding and looks fantastic. The wood on the doors and the top of the dash has all been beautifully refinished. The lower main dashboard is original and shows normal patina. All the gauges and instruments work well, and the stereo has been upgraded to a modern unit.

The engine compartment is where the excitement lies. The venerable 4.6 liter straight six is paired with the four-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission. The engine rebuild, which took place 15,000 miles ago, included all new parts and the nearly $30,000 receipt is included on our website. The chassis and suspension are agile and very comfortable on its 120-inch wheelbase. The addition of the modern air conditioning and power steering transform the driving experience. Even in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees F, this is a joy to drive. To servo assisted power brakes respond well and provide confidence. The wide white walled radials and seat belts add to the safety of this Bentley.

This Bentley comes complete with over 50 years of documentation, including receipts for its restoration, detailed notes and a small library of service manuals, owner’s manuals and the like.

For more information and details, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.623.404.9042, or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com. This Bentley is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom. We are pleased to offer FaceTime or WhatsApp live video inspections and we help coordinate shipping worldwide. We also have financing partners if you are interested in financing.
