Harry's Thoughts

The more I learn about this particular GTO the more I like it. A knock out color combination, fully optioned, numbers matching and it is largely a survivor. The last owner enjoyed it for 30 years!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a very nice and original “numbers matching” 1964 Pontiac GTO convertible with tri-power and automatic transmission that was ordered in the classic color combination of Starlight Black (Paint Code A) with Medium Red interior (Trim Code 218) and an Ivory convertible top (Top Code 1).  But this was not only ordered in the right colors, it was fully optioned with air conditioning, tilt wheel, power bucket seats, retractable seat belts and more.  This GTO comes complete with documentation from the past three decades, including documentation from the past owner of 30 years.

This was a well optioned GTO when new, with features on the Trim Tag as well as the PHS documentation.  The features include:

  • GTO-only automatic transmission
  • Air Conditioning (Tri Comfort)
  • Power steering
  • Power brakes
  • Power Bucket Seats
  • Center Console
  • Front Retractable Seat Belts
  • Tilt Steering Wheel
  • Tinted glass
  • Red-Stripe Tires
  • AM Radio
  • 3.08 differential
  • Deluxe wheel covers and side mirror

In 1997 the GTO was repainted in its original Starlight Black livery by Cunningham Auto Body in Independence, MO. It has very nice luster and gloss and still has some residual orange peel making it look factory correct.  There are several small areas where there are light scratches and some chips that have been touched up.  The chrome and stainless all look original and are in good to very good condition.  There are no dents in the paint or the chrome and the stainless only has light scratching from normal use.

The interior appears to be all original in its medium red vinyl power bucket seats with red carpeting.  The interior is in very nice condition for being original.  The dashboard is in great shape with its engine turned detailing.  There are no cracks in the dash pad, although the steering wheel has a few cracks.  There are auxiliary gauges that have been added below the dashboard that work well and appear appropriate.

The venerable 389 CID V8 was completely rebuilt on December 10, 1991 by Mann Speed Specialty in Independence, MO.  Every component of the engine was bought new using the original correct block.  It was then upgraded to a true 1964 tri-power (with correct Rochester 2 Jet carburetors” from its original four-barrel carburetor giving it (360 hp). Based on the paperwork in the file, the engine would have accumulated about 48,000 miles since the rebuild.  The engine has the correct 1964 389 casting number of 9773155 and is date coded January 23, 1964.

The engine and carburetors are completely dialed in and the car cold starts with ease.  We have the PHS documentation and the GTO seems all proper (colors and features) and correct except it was born a 4-barrel carburetor car with the upgraded Tri-Power added later and the red line tires are now radials (Coker Classics, date coded 2001 with little use and in excellent condition).

This GTO was built at the Pontiac, MI plant during the fifth week of January, 1964. By 1991, this GTO was owned by Dr. Ron Huffman, who has taken care of it since.  It had accumulated 97,623 miles from new.  For the first ten years, Dr. Huffman and his wife used the GTO regularly as a fair-weather driver (using it as their convertible).  Since about 2009, this GTO has had limited use solely as a collector car.  In the past 20 years it has averaged about 100 miles per year.

We have just finished detailing the car and we had a full mechanical inspection performed.  This GTO fires right up even when cold and performs very well.  The steering and brakes function as they should and the car is a delight to drive.  We did light cleaning and painting of the undercarriage. The passenger side rear body mount is broken and should eventually be repaired.  The car otherwise was undercoated when new and is largely otherwise very solid and rust free.  We installed a new air conditioning compressor and converted it to 134a Freon, and the system works great.

This GTO is ready for driving as well as showing. This GTO comes with a file of about 30 years of receipts documenting the past restoration and maintenance work. It also comes complete with an original sales brochure, owner’s manual, warranty booklet, convertible top operations manual and service manual.  The physical condition of this GTO is between a No. 2 and No. 3, but the fantastic ownership history, great color combination and the abundance of original factory options give a 20-25% increase in values.  Data points include the following:

Hagerty Value for No. 2 Condition (Tri-Power)          $125,000
Hagerty Value for No. 2 Condition (4 Barrel)               $79,900
NADA Guide for High Retail                                          $120,500

This is an all “numbers matching” GTO with all the right specs in the best colors. For more details, please call, email or text Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or sales@classicpromenade.com. This GTO is available for inspection at our Phoenix, AZ showroom.

checked with hagerty value web page. they don’t list a 1964 gto. just a lemans. are you saying this car is a number 1 concourse condition?
just asking.

December 20, 2020

Hi rgebbie, Hagerty publishes a little book with all the post-war collector car values in it. For some reason they don’t seem to be consistent between the two platforms, the books and the website. In the book they refer to it as a 1964 LeMans with the GTO option, like our car. I will add a photo of the value page for this car at the end of the photo gallery, for your reference. Now, from a value standpoint this GTO is between a No. 2 and a No. 3, and it is certainly not close to a No. 1 (trailer queen). Values for great color and option combinations, along with great ownership history, can bump up the values about 20-25%. We think that should apply here. But let’s see. Thank you for the questions and let me know how else we can assist you! Harry

You note that the drivers door does not unlock. Obviously a problem; what’s the fix? Also, no pictures with the top up. What color is it, and how old, in what condition?

December 18, 2020

Good morning, Tory. We will be completing the photo shoot of the GTO this morning, December 18th. The initial photos were just initial quick overview shots. The top is the correct original color and is in excellent condition. It is “Ivory” or white in color. Photos will be coming later today. We’ll have much more by the end of day today. We haven’t had time to look into the door lock mechanism, but will likely have it fixed before it comes to auction. We installed new exhaust tips yesterday and will be doing some front end (tie rods, etc.) work on it as well. As always, feel free to ask any questions. Thank you!!

Interesting Fact: The Pontiac GTO was produced in two different periods of time. The first production cycle was from 1964 to 1974, but the second cycle took place between 2004 and 2006. The first generation of the Pontiac GTO was the first muscle car to be produced in the 1960s and 1970s and is credited with starting the trend of offering many competing models. This vehicle was selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968 and the first models use a 6.4 to 6.6-liter Pontiac V8 engine which could produce up to 325 horsepower. When the Pontiac GTO went through its second stage of production, it appeared dated to people in the United States since it was originally designed in 2001. Additionally, the price inflated to about $34,000 at the time of its launch which helped to garner a lukewarm acceptance for the car. Earlier models of the Pontiac GTO are far more sought after than later models, but both prove to be powerful cars happily driven by many!
