THE ESSENTIALS

We are pleased to represent for sale this 1933 Auburn Salon Model 8-105 Five Passenger Phaeton Sedan Convertible or “Convertible Sedan” that has been enjoyed by one family since 1955. The restoration quality of this California since new example is absolutely breathtaking. This is offered for sale for the first time in 65 years. It has covered a mere 47 miles since its restoration.

The father of the owner acquired this Auburn in 1955 in Southern California. Photos reveal that this motorcar was a rust-free and thoroughly complete original car. We have included numerous copies of the photos of the “Before”, “During” and “After” that document the thoroughness of the restoration. The restoration was performed by Murray Motor Car in Monroe, WA. In total, the Murray brothers restored four Classic Era motorcars for the family. Their work quality speaks for itself and is absolutely breathtaking. Using CCCA or concours judging, this would average about 99 points and could easily perform better with minor detailing.

The exterior body and paint are excellent in every respect. The tan and auburn brown two tone livery is accented with red coach stripes and red artillery wheels. There are only a few small areas of touch up needed on the door jamb areas, touch-up that would be performed before serious concours entry. These are just the normal small chips from opening and closing the doors, etc. The red artillery wheels are accented with tan pin stripes and really help bring out the red tone of the Auburn brown fenders. The chrome on this Auburn is plentiful and gorgeous! By 1933 Auburn had the design nailed. The lines of the car are perfect from front to back, with continuous lines that flow beautifully. The convertible top is finished in tan Haartz cloth and the auxiliary luggage trunk also has a matching Haartz cloth canvas cover. Imagine this motorcar with the top lowered and the windshield folded down!

The interior is replete with chocolate brown leather with dark brown contrasting piping that is as soft and supple as if it were installed yesterday. There is no evidence of wear or use anywhere in the interior. The engine-turned dash is truly art deco. All the instruments are as-new and work well. The gas gauge may or may not be functional as it has limited fuel in the tank. It is a wonderful change to have an American classic with a tachometer. The interior is dripping with chrome! The folding windscreen, top hardware, dashboard all have chrome, and it is all as-new.

The Auburns powertrain is the venerable Lycoming 98 bhp, 268.6 cu in. L-head inline eight-cylinder engine with power delivered by three-speed manual transmission with the Columbia dual-ratio rear axle, solid and live rear axles with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel vacuum-assisted hydraulic brakes. This example drives as-new in every respect. It is without rattles and vibrations, accelerates well, brakes well and performs as it should. The engine compartment is very well detailed with the exception of some staining from a prior leak of coolant. This is easily repainted. The chassis is beautifully detailed and is better than it ever was when new.
