Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

SOLD to California!! This is an exceptional example of the curvaceous and high performing 1996 Bentley Continental R Wide Body Concours Edition. These were hand built masterpieces with a total production of 11 cars over a two year period. The coachwork is pure Mulliner-Park Ward and has a classical elegance that looks contemporary today. When new, this special order motorcar is said to have had a retail price of $329,000.

This Bentley is in nice overall condition, belying the fact that its 25 years old and having covered a mere 52,000 miles. It has lived most of its life in Newport Beach, CA and Ft, Lauderdale, FL, and has been regularly serviced and well maintained (documented mainly through CARFAX reports and our inspection). We have been told that this Bentley was custom ordered for Jose Conseco of the Oackland A’s.

The livery is striking in Light Silver pearl, being accented with and 18” Bentley five spoke wheels. But the hand formed wide body fenders make this one of only about 50 Continental Rs during its entire production run to receive this treatment, being copied from the Continental T. These massive hand formed wide body bolsters give the car a more aggressive and curvaceous look. This is the workmanship of Mulliner-Park Ward for the Concours Edition cars. This special series had integrated vents in the hood (bonnet), the matrix chrome grill, the front spoiler with meshed ventilation, a massive tail pipe and special skirting around the car to integrate the wide body into the coupe form. The exterior paint is nearly perfect with only a small scratch on the roof near the passenger side door. This is not noticeable without very close scrutiny (which is our job to point out).

As stunning as the exterior appears, the interior we believe to be simply gorgeous. All 11 of the Concours Edition Continentals were built with soft two tone Silverstone and Slate leather. The headliner and dash pad are also matching leather and look excellent. All of the leather is soft and supple with minimal age related creases. The interior shows typical wear for a 52,000 miles car. The bird’s-eye maple veneers are gray as part of the Concours Edition and are in good condition. There are several areas where there is slight cracking in the veneer, predominantly in the center console and there is some fading noticeable, especially on the door caps. These can be seen in the photo gallery. This example is consistent with Bentley’s country club ambiance. The windows are tinted.

The true heart of the Continental R is the engine and drivetrain. The entire drivetrain is based on the Turbo R and it shared all of its components. Built with the venerable Bentley turbocharged 6.75 liter V8, the Concours Edition R’s had the upgraded 400 bhp about 600 ft. lbs. of torque and incredible torque available at low RPMs. This provided the power to achieve 152 mph and a 0-60 mph time in under 6 seconds. The power is transmitted through the tried and true GM 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission. And this performance is from a motorcar weighing more than two tons!

This Bentley comes complete with its owners manual, two sets of keys, tools, safety equipment. We have this priced well, especially for a wide body R, let alone a special edition such as this. These are sure to increase in value over time.

Everything works as it should. We completed a detailed inspection and found everything to be in proper order. We ran a CARFAX and found it to be pretty detailed and noting a minor rear bumper accident in 1999. There is no sign of any damage or repair.

This Bentley is ready to show, drive and enjoy. For more details and information please call or text Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or email us at harry@classicpromenade.com. The Bentley is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom.

The Bentley R-Type Continental was a high-performance version of the R-Type. It was the fastest four-seat car in production at the time. The prototype was developed by a team of designers and engineers from Rolls-Royce Ltd. and coachbuilder H. J. Mulliner & Co. led by Rolls-Royce's Chief Project Engineer, Ivan Evernden. Rolls-Royce worked with H. J. Mulliner instead of their own coachbuilding subsidiary Park Ward because the former had developed a lightweight body construction system using metal throughout instead of the traditional ash-framed bodies. The styling, finalized by Stanley Watts of H. J. Mulliner, was influenced by aerodynamic testing conducted at Rolls-Royce's wind tunnel by Evernden's assistant, Milford Read. The rear fins stabilized the car at speed and made it resistant to changes in direction due to crosswinds.
