Harry's Thoughts

This is a wonderfully preserved 911S Targa with 45,000 original miles. This needs nothing to be enjoyed, shown and driven.

THE ESSENTIALS

This 1977 Porsche 911S Targa is a fantastic three owner, 45,000 mile example of the factory’s continuing efforts in the 1970’s to produce world class sports and racing cars.  This is a well optioned Targa with air conditioning, power windows, a special order Copper Brown Metallic paint and a Blaupunkt Bamberg Radio.

In all genres of collectible and historical artifact, few things are valued more than originality. Well preserved and cared for examples of rare and relevant pieces of history have no substitute in terms of importance in the historical record. From historically relevant fine art to the time tested mechanical ingenuity of a by gone era, well-kept original examples are the most desirable.

The car shows very few signs of age or abuse and has a little over 45,000 original miles on the odometer. It has had but three owners from new and comes complete with a Porsche Heritage Certificate.  This 911S retains nearly every option available on a 911 in this trim at the time, including power windows, air conditioning, and the optional Blaupunkt Bamberg radio.

BODY:   The body of this 911 is one of the many high points of the car. With the exception of very minor touch ups, the paint is in original condition. All of the body panels are ripple, dent, and rust free and don’t appear to have ever had any sort of body or accident damage.  The glass and seals are in excellent condition and there are no leaks evident. The windshield is original and also in very nice condition.  The body trim, including the stainless steel and rubber, is in excellent condition. Everything needing attention and detail was attended to.

INTERIOR:  The interior was the subject of intensive preservation, as is trimmed in the original and unrestored partial tan leather seating areas and original carpeting. The seating areas are in beautiful condition, with no rips, tears, or wear evident. The door panels are also in the same condition as is the trim.

All of the accessories, including the climate control, are in perfect working condition.

The windows power up and down and work perfectly. The trunk is in very nice condition, the trunk covering is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or missing pieces, and the spare tire is accounted for and in very nice condition. Most important, the mechanism that opens and closes the gas lid is in perfect working order.

UNDERCARRIAGE:  The underside of the car is exactly what a low-mileage car should look like. It was not in any type of harsh climate or abused at any time over its life. It is very solid and very well preserved and shows no evidence of any accident damage.  It is in amazing condition.

ENGINE and ENGINE COMPARTMENT:  The powerplant in this Porsche is the original 6-cylinder engine. It has not been restored and is completely original and unmodified. All aspects of the motor are in perfect working order, and the compression ratio is exactly where it should be.

The engine bay has been preserved and has all of the original specifications with all components in operational condition.  Every detail of the engine compartment is “Porsche Correct” and beautifully presented. It would be difficult to find an original engine compartment with a better presentation.

All engine and drivetrain maintenance is up to date, including the following services:

-oil and filter change

-air filter replacement

-installation of new fuel filter

-installation of new drive belts

-lubrication of entire chassis

-full service of the braking system including new pads and fluid flush

TRANSMISSION:  The five-speed transmission in this car is in perfect working order and functions as it should. It shifts through all of the gears smoothly and is the original transmission to the car.

TIRES, WHEELS, and BRAKES:  The wheels are original Fuchs “6’s and 7’s” which are very special in and of themselves. They were restored two years ago by a marque expert and are in beautiful condition, as you can see in the photos. A lot of time and effort was placed into the difficult restoration of the wheels.  The tires are in very nice condition and are not in need of replacement at this time.  They and are the correct and original size replacement for the Fuchs wheels.

The entire braking system has been gone through to ensure every part works as it should.  All rotors, pads, and seals have been replaced and brake fluid flushed.

OVERALL DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:  This 911 runs and drives as should. The 6-cylinder powerplant runs and accelerates smoothly and very quickly and the transmission shifts as it should.

The car drives around town and on the open road with no squeaks, creaks, or rattles.  It has had all of the necessary service recently performed including oil-change, tune up, installation of new battery, etc. It needs absolutely nothing to drive, show, and enjoy. All of the mechanical aspects of the car work as they should.

PLEASE NOTE:  This Porsche 911S still retains all of its original or N.O.S. components! This means the engine, transmission, rear end, etc. are original or correct to the car.  All of the numbers, markings, etc., are correct.  It is an original and very special car that, as evidenced by the low mileage and condition, has been driven very sparingly and properly cared for. If you’ve never driven a 911 of this period, you are in for a treat with this one!

If you are serious about purchasing this vehicle, we encourage you to inspect it in person and test drive it.

Interesting Fact: The Porsche 911 is a sports car that has been in production since 1963. This two-door, rear-engine vehicle has been sold for public use while also being modified by private teams for racing and competition. It is also one of the oldest sports car coupes with over one million produced as of 2017. Originally designed to be a more powerful variant of the Porsche 356 in 1963, the 911 started by using a rear-mounted flat-6 engine that gave the car 130 horsepower. There were four seats in the vehicle but the back two are so small that the car is referred to as a “2+2” rather than a four-seater. The Porsche 911 has seen numerous variants over the years and also received many awards. In 2004, Sports Car International listed the Porsche 911 as number three on their list for Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. This impressive sports car has seen many design changes over the years and is still purchased for its power and reliability today!
