Harry's Thoughts

It's hard not to love one of the most iconic American cars of all time, and this particular example is really impresses. I love the color combination, the 4-speed, and the overall appeal of this legendary nameplate.

THE ESSENTIALS

ONLINE ONLY AUCTION at www.classicpromenade.com.  Having undergone a complete restoration, this awe-inspiring 1968 Shelby Mustang GT350 looks and feels better than it did when it was first built back in December of 1967. The included Marti Report details an extensive list of factory installed options including factory A/C, a tilt steering column, and 4-speed manual transmission.  The restoration was painstakingly conforming to the original specifications and the accuracy and attention to detail are superb!

A total of around 500 miles has been added since a 2008 restoration, so the car still appears to be pristine. This Shelby won its Senior National First at the AACA Annual Meet in 2010, a testament to the car’s overall condition.  This is the highest achievement for the AACA concours competition.

This Shelby is impeccably finished in Highland Green over a black interior. The paint, stripes, chrome and other brightwork show without flaw. One would be hard pressed to find another Shelby GT350 in this color palette, similarly optioned, with this impressive level of near perfection.

The black interior maintains a great deal of originality, with the factory option black décor bucket seats. The original tilt-away steering column and steering wheel, sport deck rear seat, and the optional tachometer and trip odometer are all very rare and nice details. The black carpet, door panels, dash, and gauges appear like new. Controls all work as they should. This GT350 has two Carroll Shelby signatures, one on the dash and the other on the air cleaner cover.

Worth mentioning is the A/C system, with an original metal Ford tag on the compressor. The original style heavy duty battery really completes the look. Keen observers will not be able to see the aftermarket intake manifold and carburetor, but any purist will love to know that the original intake manifold and carburetor come with the sale.

An independent inspection was conducted, and the report is available for your review. It confirms what should be apparent, that this is one of the finest examples of one of the most sought after Shelby’s in the collector car market.

Interesting Fact: The Mustang Shelby was originally built by Shelby American from 1965 to 1968, but production switched to Ford from 1969 to 1970. When the fifth generation of the For Mustang was released in 2005, however, the Shelby nameplate was revived as a high-performance variant of the car. The first Shelby models were the GT350 that were often called “Cobras”. From 1965 to 1966, the Shelby vehicles had 271 horsepower V8 engines as upgraded by Shelby American. Before their upgrades, the car was just a stock Mustang with a four-speed manual transmission. The Shelby GT350s were not made for comfort, but for speed. In fact, 34 “GT350R” models were made specifically for competition use. Modern Mustang Shelby’s produce upwards of 350 horsepower and are built as packages to be added onto Mustang GT variants. All in all, Shelby has become a powerful variant of any Ford Mustang and can provide the vehicle with far more power than its base form allows. The Shelby rendition is a sought-after kit to be added onto the Ford Mustang by many owners!
