Harry's Thoughts

This is a stunning car. The design of this Zagato bodied Lancia Appia is striking. It appears to be speeding even when stationary in a parking lot!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is the last iteration and the ultimate refinement of the 1963 Lancia Appia Sport Zagato on the highly desirable shorter wheelbase.   This is available for public sale for the first time in 40 years and one of only 200 made.

This has been part of a large collection of important motorcars in the Los Angeles area owned by a very knowledgeable collector of rare and highly original examples.  This Lancia is no exception and does not disappoint.  It wears its correct and original California “Black Plates” helping to attest to its provenance.  This Zagato was bought by the present owner about 40 years ago in Newport Beach, CA.  It had previously been owned by the well known TV Producer, Arthur Vitarelli, who made scores of shows including Mary Poppins, Zorro and The Love Bug.  Mr. Vitarelli would often drive the Zagato from Newport Beach to the studios (at a time when traffic was rare in Southern California).

The Pale Green livery is a repaint from about seven years ago and is still in very nice and serviceable condition.  The glass, chrome and stainless trim are all original and in good condition.  We love the fastback rooflines and the Frenched taillights.  The Appia Sport was the design inspiration of the young Ercole Spada who had just joined Zagato.  It was his mission to adapt the Appia GTE bodywork to the shorter, 92.5 inch wheelbase (a full 6.3 inches in wheelbase and 8 inches shorter overall than the Zagato GTE).  The result is stunning!

The interior is in very nice condition overall, with the original black leather and carpet being replaced a couple years ago.  Black Wilton wool carpet was installed in the front of the passenger compartment with the original black carpeting in the rear somewhat faded.  The original Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo is installed and not presently working.

The Lancia Appia is powered by the more powerful Series 3 V4 1.1 liter engine that produces 60 hp.  It features a four speed manual transmission with synchromesh in the top three gears.  According to the owner, the Lancia is in good overall mechanical condition.  The fuel tank has a non-original inside tank that was installed years ago.

This Zagato comes complete with NOS suspension components as well and historical documentation from the seller.  The odometer is displaying 6,758 miles, but the true mileage is unknown.

For more details and information, please call or text Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or email us at harry@classicpromenade.com.  The Lancia remains with its present owner in the Los Angeles vicinity.

We spoke with the mechanic that has worked on the Lancia for the owner. He confirmed (as well as the owner) that the Lancia drives wonderfully, is a total blast to drive, is very peppy and that everything works well. He did not try the wipers. On one photo in the photo gallery, there is a photo showing the drivers door sill plate. The material below the sill plate is weatherstripping that is old and discolored. In the photo it looks as though it could be rust. It is not. There isn’t rust on this car.

Sure looks nice parked. How about a video of it driving like bat.com? Also please clarify mechanical condition and rebuild history. What condition are all the components?

You may notice that for most of our listings we have video showing the car running and driving. This Lancia is an exception. We flew out to Los Angeles to inspect, photograph and video five of these cars in one collection. The Lancia did not have a functioning battery and therefore we did not start the car. The owner has been a friend for the past 30 years and is very knowledgeable about European classics. He says that the former owner, Mr. Vitarelli, took excellent care of the car and that today it still runs and drives very well with no issues, no odd noises, smoke, etc. He mentioned that while driving it in first gear there is some transmission noise which may or may not be common with the model. Further, the owner does not have a smart phone, nor even an email address. So getting additional video is not feasible without sending someone there. I hope this is helpful. Let us know how else we can assist you.

The last and ultimate of Zagato's Appias was the Appia Sport, built from 1961 to 1963 on a short wheelbase chassis coded 812.05. The Sport's premiere took place at the March 1961 Geneva Motor Show, and production began concurrently; it did not replace the standard wheelbase GTE, which remained on sale alongside it up to 1962. At 2,350 mm (92.5 in) the Sport's wheelbase was 160 mm (6.3 in) shorter than the GTE's, resulting in a 200 mm (7.9 in) shorter overall length. Adapting the GTE bodywork to the smaller dimensions was the first job of a young Ercole Spada, just hired at Zagato. From the front the Sport was similar to an open headlight GTE, but had a much rounder rear end, tail lights fully sunken into the bodywork, and a fastback roofline. The Sport is the only Appia Zagato for which production numbers are certain, as the coachbuilder started keeping detailed registers of its production only in 1960: production began in March 1961 concurrently to the model launch, with chassis #1001, and ended in January 1963 with chassis #1201, the 200th car. It is also the most standardised of all Zagato Appias, though differences in exterior and interior trim from one car to another were still present, depending on part availability at the time and on the client's desires. A Lancia Appia Zagato was raced in the 1959 12 Hours of Sebring, among the drivers was newsman Walter Cronkite
