THE ESSENTIALS

1963 Mercedes-Benz 220SE 220/250SE Faux Cabriolet 4-Speed

We are selling this on behalf of the estate of the longtime San Diego owner who is now deceased.

Do you want all of the feeling of driving a $200,000 Mercedes 4-speed Cabriolet for pennies on the dollar? This is a modified classic Mercedes. It started life as a 220SE Coupe, which is a pretty rare and valuable car these days! At some point, this coupe was converted into a faux 250SE Cabriolet.

The drivetrain is rock solid with excellent performance from what we believe is a 2.5 liter fuel injected engine from a 250. This excellent engine is paired with a top performing four-speed manual transmission, making this fun to drive. Again, all aspects of the drivetrain are tight and perform well.

Why a faux Cabriolet you might ask? Because this has no convertible top mechanism, at all. The top boot has been built up with foam. There is no way to really know this has no top without very close inspection. So again, while you’re paying pennies on the dollar, the world will see you as piloting a high-priced classic! And, the reality is, when you’re behind the wheel it feels exactly like the real deal. So whether you use it to cruise the beach or drive to the country club, this is the most fun you can have on four wheels!

The 250SE is fitted with wide white wall radial tires that are in good condition. The radials pair well with the radials and make for a nice handling classic. In the trunk is a full spare, jack and Mercedes tool roll, filled with small tools.

The white paint is in overall good condition and is very serviceable for daily driving with few scratches or issues. It’s just been color sanded and looks very nice. The car itself shows signs of prior rust, although it is not visible without pulling up carpet or other drastic inspection techniques. The chrome overall is in very nice condition. The car comes with a car cover.

The upholstery is done in black vinyl and looks very correct. There are a couple of seams that need repair (shown in photos), but these are minor. The wood within the interior is very nice and needs nothing. There is a modern stereo in the glovebox and an amplifier in the trunk, which we have not used.

If you are looking for the most fun you can have for a limited budget, this may well be your car. You’ll not have to invest large sums of money to make this a dependable tour car- it’s already there! We think this will sell very quickly, so act fast. We only have one to sell! Upon negotiating a sale we will need about 15 days to have it approved by the court/heirs. The Cabriolet is available for inspection in San Marcos, CA.

About Mercedes 220SE’s:

The coupe made its debut in Stuttgart in February 1961, with the convertible following later at the Frankfurt show. In either form, these were elegant and expensive motor cars with the superior engineering and luxurious outfitting that both American and European buyers came to expect from the marque that was producing models as stately as the 600 Pullman and as sporting as the 230 SL.

With mechanical fuel injection, disc brakes, and power steering, it was one of the most sophisticated family cars available in its day. This luxurious model was the last of the hand-built Mercedes.

With a chassis code of 111.021, Benz produced 14,173 examples of the Mercedes 220SE Coupe from 1961 to 1965. Contact Harry for more details at +1.602.245.7200 or email us at harry@classicpromenade.com.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse (German for "special class", abbreviated as "S-Klasse"), is a series of full-size luxury sedans, limousines and armored sedans produced by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz, a division of German company Daimler AG. The S-Class is the designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since. The S-Class is the flagship vehicle for Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class has debuted many of the company's latest innovations, including drivetrain technologies, interior features, and safety systems (such as the first seatbelt pretensioners).[5] The S-Class has ranked as the world's best-selling luxury sedan.[6] In automotive terms, Sonderklasse refers to "a specially outfitted car." Although used colloquially for decades,[citation needed] following its official application in 1972, six generations of officially named S-Klasse sedans have been produced.
