1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

Rare Special Order Color, Elegant and Sporty

$119,800

Harry's Thoughts

This is spectacular in its Light Green Metallic livery! It has an elegance that most 190SLs lack. I don't recall seeing another 190SL in this color. This is one to see!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a wonderful example of a well cared for 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL roadster that has been restored as-needed.  It is striking in its original Light Green Metallic that was a special order only color from the factory.  While not a concours trailer queen, this 190SL looks wonderful and is fun to drive.

The Light Green Metallic (DB 274 H) livery is truly stunning, whether viewed in doors, in the sunlight or in the shade.  The metallic accentuates the curves that the 190SL is known for and reveals a variety of tones from nearly silver to darker green.  It is a color that we don’t recall ever seeing on a 190SL, but have seen it on 300Sc coupes and cabriolets.  The paint is in overall excellent condition with some areas showing some orange peeling which could be further polished out.  The major chrome items such as the grills, hub caps, trim rings, light surrounds and bumpers are restored and re-plated and all look terrific.  The windshield frame, door handles and mirror are original and exhibit minor pitting from age.  The overall look is stunning.

The tan canvas convertible top is as-new and fits nice and snug.  The dark green top boot also looks new and is in excellent condition and looks fantastic when contrasted with the light green paint.  The new Goodyear radials drive great and look right for a US delivery 190SL with a small white wall.

The Dark Green Leather (Code 1073) interior is also stunning in contrast to the ample use of chrome throughout the interior dash and doors as well as the light green metallic paint.  The carpet is also a mid green with darker green binding which compliments the interior, making it an elegant and sporty look.

The engine compartments is very well detailed, well enough for showing at regional car shows.  The original Solex carbs are included in the sale but have been replaced with Weber carburetors (thank goodness) for performance and reliability.  The original starter has also been replaced with a faster more efficient starter, with the original starter included in the sale.  Also included in the sale are a load of spare parts, all new, an owners manual, original complete tool set and roll as well as the correct 190SL tire pressure gauge.

We drove it extensively in 110 degree heat, and it performed well.  All the instrumentation works well except the temperature gauge is presently not functioning.

Chassis No. 121040-10-9501100, Body No. 121040-10-9500548, Engine No. 121.921-10-9501115

This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a 190SL roadster that is ready to use and can be shown with pride and any local or regional car show.  For more details and information, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or harry@classicpromenade.com.  The roadster is available for inspection in our Phoenix showroom.

The 190 SL presented an attractive, more affordable alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, sharing its basic styling, engineering, detailing, and fully independent suspension. Both cars had double wishbones in front and swing axles at the rear. Instead of the 300 SL's expensive purpose-built W198 tubular spaceframe, the 190 SL's R121 structure used a shortened unitary floorpan modified from the W121 base sedan. The 190 SL was powered by a new, slightly oversquare 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) Type M121 BII 1.9 L straight-four SOHC engine. Based on the 300 SL's straight six, it had an unchanged 85 mm bore and 4.3 mm reduced 83.6 mm stroke, was fitted with twin-choke dual Solex carburetors, and produced gross 120 hp (89 kW; 122 PS). In detuned form, it was later used in the W120 180 and W121 190 models. The car was available either as a soft-top convertible (initially priced at DM 16,500/US$ 3,998) or with removable hardtop (DM 17,650/$ 4,295). A small third-passenger transverse seat was optional. During its first years the 190 SL was available as a sports-racing model with small perspex windscreen and spartan one-piece leather covered bucket seats and aluminium doors. In 1959, the hardtop's rear window was enlarged.
