Harry's Thoughts

The Golden Hawk has the iconic look of the space age as only penned by Raymond Loewy's team of designers. This is a gorgeous example with all the right provenance to make it one to love.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a terrific example of the stylish and iconic 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk that has been lovingly cared for by its owner for the past 51 years.  With 68,067 original miles and having two owners from new that lived in the Washington, California and Arizona, this is a rust free Golden Hawk that has been restored as needed over the years.  Today, it is a wonderful driving Golden Hawk that can be shown at regional car shows and used as desired for touring.  We love the timeless space-age look of the Golden Hawks!!

The livery is finished in a stunning two-tone Snowcap White contrasted with Midnight Black.  The paint is in overall very nice condition with excellent shine and finish.  There are a few small touched up areas, mainly around the hood from normal use.  There are no dents or scratches and the chrome and stainless are in overall excellent condition.  If you look very close, a couple of the plastic Studebaker badges have light cracking, as per the photo gallery.  Overall, the exterior of the Studebaker is in show-ready condition.

The interior is finished in a sharp and sporty white and gray vinyl with silver piping.  It is in very nice condition without tears or other issues.  The black carpeting is also in excellent condition.  The engine turned dash and aeronautical instruments are very clear and in nice condition, only the steering wheel has a couple of small cracks from age.  Overall, the interior looks great!

The engine compartment is in show condition today.  The venerable Packard 352 CID V8 offered a stunning 275 hp on a relatively light body, making it what some people call the first muscle car.  It was, however, one of the fastest cars of its day.  The three-speed automatic shifts well and makes it a pleasure to drive.  This example is very well optioned with 15 different options ordered when new.

This Golden Hawk was shipped new to Belcourt, Seattle on January 10, 1956.  The Golden Hawk was bought new by Mr. R F Hoard.  By 1965, Mr. Hoard moved to California.  The file history has many registration and title documents going back to 1958.  The late owner acquired this Studebaker from Mr. Hoard on July 1st 1980.  He was a fairly well known collector and this was one of his favorites.  By October 1994, he moved from Bainbridge Island, WA to Arizona.  By 1994, it had accumulated a mere 67,193 miles.   Today, the Studebaker has 68,067 miles from new.  This Studebaker comes complete with a full service and restoration file dating back to 1958.

On our website, we have published the 154-point inspection report.  We found that the reverse lights are non-operational, but most everything else is in great shape and working well.

The Studebaker Golden Hawk is one of the top of the line offerings for sporty grand touring motorcars.   With only 4,071 made, they are rare today.  Especially with the provenance of 51 years of ownership and 68,000 miles that this offers.  The Hagerty Value Guide shows a No. 2 example as being worth $41,000.  We have this fairly priced to sell quickly.

The Studebaker Golden Hawk is a two-door pillarless hardtop personal luxury car produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, between 1956 and 1958. The last Studebaker until the Avanti to have styling influenced by industrial designer Raymond Loewy's studio, the Golden Hawk took the basic shape of the 1953–55 Champion/Commander Starliner hardtop coupe but added a large, almost vertical eggcrate grille and raised hoodline in place of the earlier car's swooping, pointed nose, and was introduced as the Studebaker Speedster. At the rear, a raised, squared-off trunklid replaced the earlier sloped lid, and vertical fiberglass tailfins were added to the rear quarters. The Golden Hawk was two inches shorter than the standard Hawk at 153.6 inches.
