Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

SOLD to California!! This is an older restoration of the classic 1955 Buick Century Convertible. We love the two tone livery featuring Cherokee Red and Dover White, white convertible top and the matching red and white vinyl interior. And, of course, a sea of glorious chrome!! This Buick has won awards over the years and still looks terrific today.

The Buick is in very nice condition, perfect for touring and local car shows and events. The acrylic lacquer paint overall looks very nice but there are a few areas that would benefit from touching up, mainly on the drivers side white cove section. We confirmed that there is no evidence of any filler used in the restoration of the Buick, so this is an older restoration of a solid rust-free example. The chrome and stainless look nearly perfect. The chrome on this car alone would cost a good $15,000 to re-plate today!

The red and white vinyl interior looks wonderful with seats reminding you more of a sofa, and the white power convertible top folds down in seconds. The black carpet is also in nearly new condition and the dash glistens with chrome, contrasting well with the black paint. All the glass was replaced during the restoration and is excellent today.

The venerable 322 cu in Buick V8 fires up immediately and provides excellent power. The engine was rebuilt in 2013 and features hardened valves. The sound of the engine is fantastic, with the free flow mufflers added into the dual exhaust to give it a throaty grumble.

The long ago and long time owner of the Century were Kenneth and Janet Hoke from Tulsa, OK. They sold the Buick in 1997 to Leland Love who resided in Groveport, Ohio, having covered 66,566 miles from new. Mr. Love treated it to a complete restoration in the mid-1990’s. The car was sandblasted to bare metal and We have a stack of receipts and photo documentation of the restoration. It was stripped and thoroughly restored. Attesting to the quality of the restoration, Mr. Love won a silver award at the 1999 Buick Club of America National meeting in Columbus, OH. The Love’s enjoyed the car in parades and a variety of local events.

In July of 2002, the Buick was sold to our consignment client and owner of the car, Wallace Graner from Austin, TX. Mr. Graner has enjoyed the Buick for the past 17 years. In 2013, Mr. Graner treated the Buick to a thorough refreshing of the restoration, investing about $15,000. Then in 2016, Mr. Graner invested another $10,000 rebuilding the key drivetrain features as well as new wide white wall radials.

Mr. Graner enjoyed a 1955 Buick Century Convertible in his youth, buying one new from a dealer as his first ever new car purchase. The car comes with an amazing photo gallery that shows him in his car in 1955 as well as him being in this car in 2003. A recreating of meaningful life memories! Also included in the gallery is a variety of photos of Bruce Willis behind the wheel of the car in the 2004 filming of Sin City. This is a famous car!!

This Buick is ready to enjoy!! For more information or to schedule a live video inspection, call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or harry@classicpromenade.com.

Interesting Fact: The Buick Century is a model name for upscale full-sized cars that were produced on and off since the 1930s. A shorter and lighter model than modern Buick Century’s was released in 1936 which became the first generation of the Century.   A Fireball I8 engine is used in the original Buick Century that gave the model 141 horsepower and capable of sustaining 100 mile per hour speeds. Its first round of production stopped in 1942 when the model only accounted for 10 percent of Buick’s total production. In the following years, the Century changed drastically and introduced a new V6 engine meant to give the car more power.   Recent years have seen the Century turn into a standard sedan and fall out of general popularity with the public. However, the classic Buick Century is an absolute classic that is still searched for by car lovers due to how unique it has become following the different direction Buick ended up taking with design!
