Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a two family owned Packard having covered a mere 57,900 miles since new.  The present owner purchased this from the grandson of the original owner and it has been pampered since new.  It is nearly all original but has had a new high quality repaint performed many years ago and new carpeting.  The paint was done in the original livery of Maroon and the interior is the original wool broadcloth.

This Packard was purchased new by an eighty year old man and had the car for two years before he passed away.  His son inherited the Packard and used it for special occasions and kept it stored safely in a heated garage.  He used it very little and eventually sold it to a Packard enthusiast who painted the car.  It looked so good that he bought it back and stored it for the next 15 years in his Mothers heated garage.

The present owner and the consignor of the car adds: “When his mother passed away and the house was sold I received a call that he needed to sell the car.  I bought the car and towed it out that day.  I then bought a new battery, cleaned the gas tank and the radiator, put on new brakes and new tires.  The engine then started and ran smoothly.  I was able to use this car for classic car trips for the last 4 years.  It was shown at the 2011 Salisbury Concours d’Elegance.  This is an invitation only show in Des Moines Iowa for historic automobiles.    The car when purchased did not have a radio as the owner did not want a radio.  I added an original wonder bar radio a few years ago.  The hub caps were a special order when purchased new.  The carpeting was added when the car was painted.  There is one stain on the headliner.  The chrome is excellent with the exception of one spot on the rear bumper.  This car is very striking.”

This motorcar is located in Iowa.  It comes complete with the owners manual.  The Model 200 features Packards fabulous 288 cu in. straight eight and generates 135 hp.

Interesting Fact: The Packard Deluxe 200 is a full-size luxury car that was produced in Detroit, Michigan for one year from 1951 to 1952. This “200” designation was meant to symbolize that this model was the least expensive in the company’s lineup.   The Deluxe 200 line uses a 4.7-liter eight-cylinder engine that produces 125 horsepower at 3600 rpm. At the time, it was possible to get a more powerful engine for an added $45, but regardless, the Packard Deluxe 200 was considered a junior car in their lineup. Packard did not actually want to sell a large number within the 200, or 250 series, as these were inexpensive models that couldn’t keep the company profiting with their numbers alone.   In total, from 1951 to 1952, there were roughly 54,000 Deluxe 200 units produced. At the end of the year, the 200 and 250 series were renamed to the Clipper Special and Deluxe, which was a part of the company’s goal to turn their automobile line into an exclusively luxury line. The fact that the Deluxe 200 is not an intensely luxurious vehicle makes it a rare and sought-after car!
