Older Restoration, O/D, Excellent Tour Car!

Harry's Thoughts

This is a lovely driving convertible sedan with the quietist flathead V8 I've ever heard in a pre-war Cadillac. We love the overdrive and power steering!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a wonderful 1941 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Sedan that has been set up to be one of the ultimate Pre-War touring cars.  This older restoration still looks stunning and could be shown at local and regional events, but is truly a touring car.  Her past owner of over 35 years restored the car completely and then added power steering, a Gear Vendor overdrive unit, four seat belts, a fuel pump for priming and wide white wall radials.  This has made for an extremely comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.

This Cadillac (Body No. 308) was ordered new for delivery to Randall Cadillac Corp in Brooklyn, NY on May 2, 1941.  We love the running board and side mount delete specification, which accentuates its curvy and sexy shape.  By October 29th of 1974 she was owned by Keith Berg of Minnetonka, MN and then in 1975 it became part of the famed Andrew darling collection in Minneapolis, MN.  On January 6, 1987 she was bought by its last owner, Mr. John B Kinkead of St, Paul, MN.   Mr. Kinkead commenced a full restoration which included body, paint, chrome, new glass and a wiring harness.  In the late 1990’s he continued to improve her and then in 2002 he had the engine and transmission rebuilt.  The result is the quietest flat head V8 that we’ve ever heard running.  It is smooth, powerful and a pleasure to drive with its overdrive and power steering.

The livery is elegant in its Valcour Maroon (paint Code 59) and a black canvas convertible top.  The paint is overall in good condition with very nice shine and luster.  There are several smaller areas with defects and several small touched up paint chips, but these are really only noticeable upon close inspection.  The black canvas convertible top is newer and in excellent condition.  Most of the chrome is in nice condition and shows very well.  All the glass has been replaced and in excellent condition.  The fender skirts give it a terrific, streamlined look and the wheel covers and emblems are all in great condition.  The wide white walled radials complete the look while making it sportier and safer for touring.  Dual side view mirrors have been added as well.

The maroon leather interior is in excellent condition.  The leather is soft and supple and without any noticeable blemishes.  The seats are very comfortable, and the seating position is nice.  The maroon carpeting is of lesser quality than what we normally see but is very serviceable and looks fine.  The dash looks very nice, and the gauges work except for the aftermarket temperature gauge being installed.  The radio powers up but doesn’t play the clock is not working.  The white steering wheel feels great in your hands.

The engine compartment looks great and shows great attention to detail for touring preparation.  There is an oil filter system, robust cooling fan and heat shields strategically placed to help prevent vapor lock or other issues.  The power steering is not too noticeable under the hood but is a fantastic addition for touring.  The 346 CID L-Head V8 engine provides 150 horsepower.  Having few miles since its complete rebuild, it is powerful, smooth and whisper quiet.  The added Gear Vendor overdrive unit adds a 22% increase in gearing of its original 3.77 ratio rear end.  The chassis has not been detailed, but it shows that this Cadillac is solid and has not ever had rust issues.  Please review our 158-point inspection report for details.

Interesting Fact: The Cadillac Series 62 is a full-size luxury car that was produced by General Motors for 14 years from 1940 to 1964. This vehicle had seven generations over the course of its life and was occasionally marketed as the Sixty-Two or Series Sixty-Two. In its earliest years, the Cadillac Series 62 body resembles a sleek “torpedo” style C-body that features slant in the windshield along with a curved rear window. The original engine in the Series 62 is a 5.7-liter Monobloc V8 that outputs 135 horsepower. This model sold extremely well and accounted for 37 percent of Cadillacs sales in 1940. Eventually, the Cadillac Series 62 went in a boxier direction for the body until the model was renamed to the Cadillac Calais for the 1965 model year. Although the Cadillac Series 62 was discontinued, it is still viewed as a class and is sought after vehicle for many car enthusiasts!
