Harry's Thoughts

THE ESSENTIALS

Is there anything sexier than a 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe? This is a California car that was a long-time 1,000 point Dearborn Grand National meet winner that was then converted into an elegant and tasteful custom. The same owner that bought it in 1985 proceeded with a perfect meticulous restoration, showed it for about seven years, every time winning a Dearborn Award. We are very pleased to present this Coupe on consignment. (VIN: 185614959)

The livery is finished in the correct and authentic Mandarin Maroon single stage paint. It is in excellent condition throughout. The interior is finished in the correct mohair and looks beautiful. Mechanically the Coupe is excellent showing unrelenting pride of ownership.

The present owner has had this gorgeous Coupe since 1985, when he bought it in San Fernando Valley, CA. It was a nice, nearly rust free car that was slightly modified back in the day. After acquiring the Coupe, Al and his wife set out on a perfect restoration to original specifications. Following are some of the competitions that they entered the Coupe (again, every time winning a Dearborn Award for outstanding restoration):

o 1987- Bend, OR
o 1988- Dearborn, MI Grand National Meet
o 1989- Lake Arrowhead, CA (scoring 1,000 pts)
o 1990- Reno, NV (National Meet, drove there and then won!)
o 1992- Coeur d’Alene, ID (Drove there)

The restoration wasn’t just documented with trophies, the Coupe comes with a huge file full of documentation of the restoration as well as a large number of photographs.

In all, Al and his wife accumulated about 6,000 miles on the concours winner. By 2003 they wanted to enjoy the car in more modern comfort. They then started out with a new restoration into a mild custom that would be comfortable, safe and dependable tour and show car. And boy did they succeed!!

Using the concours winning car as a base, they removed the front clip, repainted it to remove any rock chips and imperfections and installed the following:

• Mustang II front end with disc brakes
• A new crate Ford 351 Windsor V8
• Full air conditioning system
• C4 automatic transmission
• Powdercoated wheels
• Holly carb
• Powdercoated headers and custom exhaust
• High capacity radiator
• Billet components including the a/c compressor and alternator
• 54 Ford steering column mated to 40 Ford steering wheel

This custom was designed and built for long range touring and shows. It is a dependable tour car and would be a crowd pleaser at any event.

Rarely do you find an all Henry Ford rust free steel 40 Ford Coupe that received a concours quality restoration. Rarely so you see such a car owned by the same meticulous owner for 30 years!! This one will sell quickly. If you’re serious, don’t wait.

Interesting Fact: The Ford DeLuxe line was introduced in 1938 as a bridge between the companies’ base models and luxury models. Used in later years to describe luxury trims that could be added to Ford vehicles, the DeLuxe was officially in production from 1937 to 1940.   Originally, this model was characterized by its sloping hood and a heart-shaped grille, but this look was quickly thrown away in favor of a more aggressive “v-shaped” grille. The Ford DeLuxe has been featured in prominent movies throughout history, such as Grease and Back to the Future.   The Ford DeLuxe was offered in every form from a two-door coupe to a four-door sedan. An 85 horsepower V8 engine is used to power the car, and the DeLuxe has no successor due to its fate of becoming a trim for additional Ford vehicles. An absolute classic, the Ford DeLuxe is one of the vehicles from history that stands out and is a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts alike!
