Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

Remember the Three P’s for Quality motorcars: Pierce Arrow, Packard and… Peerless!!  We recently had the opportunity to buy this fabulous, rust free, California car since new Peerless Six-81.  It features a restoration that was started in the 1970’s and never completed.  In 1975 it was “wrapped-up” and stored until now.  How do we know that?  Well, the newspaper used to wrap the parts was the June of 1975 edition of the LA Times!

It has a new correct interior, paint, glass and full mechanical rebuild, including the brakes, etc.  But it needs completing by an active hobbyist or collector.  The cars big six cylinder engine runs well, has terrific oil pressure, runs cool and sounds like a Packard!!  The hydraulic brakes even hold pressure after all these years!

The car was bought from a widow whose husband had passed away while he was restoring this quality motorcar.  She needed money and sold this Peerless to a long-time Southern Californian collector back around 1994.  The odometer shows 58,605 miles which is likely the total mileage since new.   Of course this is a very solid rust free car that is missing very few incidental items.

All of the heavy lifting for the restoration has been completed.  The items left are trim, wiring and lots of other little details.  It features the Club Coupe storage box in the rear seating area and the highly desirable artillery wheels.  It includes the original owners manual that is in very nice condition.

The Peerless is a very high end motorcar for 1929.  It features a well execute hydraulic brake mechanism, the Peerless made engine, a mechanical fuel pump and well made hydraulic shocks.  This is definitely a peer (well, Peerless) of Packard and other very expensive motorcars.

We will be having the pleasure of getting the car started over the upcoming weeks.  Stay tuned or contact me at harry@classicpromenade.com or call me at 602.245.7200.

Interesting Fact: Peerless was an American motor car company that produced vehicles from 1900 to 1931. This company, at the time, was a powerhouse that competed with Packard and Pierce-Arrow, being a member of the coveted “Three P’s”.   1902 was the first-year Peerless branded vehicles hit the streets that used a front-mounted engine which controlled the rear wheels via a shaft. This led to the creation of the Green Dragon racecar that competed in the world’s first 24-hour endurance race. Starting in 1911, electric lighting was introduced by Peerless in their vehicles and a custom-built V8 engine became standard until 1925.   When the effects of the Great Depression set in around 1930, Peerless saw a massive decline in sales. They attempted to market to wealthy Americans less affected by the depression, but to no avail. Eventually, Peerless turned into a brewery following the end of Prohibition. Although they no longer exist, Peerless is a renowned brand for their influence in the development of the automobile industry, and a respectable brand for any car enthusiast to have in their garage!
