Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

We are proud to offer the nicest original 1924 Packard in existence.

This is as close to a new and original 1924 Packard Touring Sedan (7 Passenger Sedan) as you can get.  We are confident in stating that this is the nicest original example remaining in the World.  This would be an absolute contender for Preservation Class events from Pebble Beach to Amelia Island.

The car throughout is a masterpiece of originality.  The paint is nearly perfect.  The Packard Blue paint on the body is absolutely gorgeous and original with only a few areas where there are minimal signs of just the beginnings of rubbing through the lacquer.  At least the front fenders have been touched up in the original Black; only an expert could detect any paint repair.

The nickel plating is in nice original condition but frankly not as breathtaking as the paint and interior.  It shows some patina and the grill has been replated in chrome, again likely in the 1970’s.

The interior is absolutely stunning!  Experts know that the Packard Six was built with the same materials, fix and finish as the most senior Eights.  This is an unbelievable example of Packard’s peak for elegance and quality of fit and finish.  The elegant gray striped wool broadcloth is nearly perfect and the padding underneath is in excellent condition, not brittle or stiff.  This appears as though the material was just ordered from Bill Hirsch!

The wood graining on the dash is magnificent.  It absolutely looks as new.  The crispness of the instruments is unparalleled, even compared to a freshly restored car.  Little details such as the gloss black paint on the steering column speak to you as you survey the perfection of Packard’s craftsmen.

The carpet in the rear passenger compartment has some odd kind of wear and would be worth considering an overlay or replacement.  Whereas the wood throughout, three elegant silk shades and the two jump seats for added passengers are perfect.  Oddly, even the glass shows no sign of deterioration, a result of careful storage over the decades.

The engine compartment is original with some areas of the engine having had repaint as maintenance and preservation.  The engine may benefit from some sympathetic detailing, or leaving as it is for future generations to see.  The car has been regularly serviced and runs and drives as a Packard Six should.

History of the Packard Six

This Packard was bought new by a physician in Montana as a present for his wife.  This Packard was ordered with a multitude of extras including the sun visor, oil cleaning system and a very formal interior.  As ordered, this 133 inch wheelbase Packard may have listed for close to $4,000.

She enjoyed the elegant motorcar until his death in 1937.  Immediately following his death she carefully stored the Packard in their barn.  It had its newly issued 1937 Montana license plates mounted on the car.

35 years or so passed and in the 1970’s the car was exhumed from the barn and sympathetically re-commissioned by the father of our consignor.   What a barn find!!

Its new and second caretaker was a major collector of Classics in Southern California and enjoyed the Packard immensely until his death in 1983.  At that time it passed to his family, Tom and Pat (the daughter of the deceased owner), making this a true two family car for the past 38 years.

Tom and Pat have continued careful maintenance of the Packard since 1983.  They registered the car with the present California “blue plates” and used the car regularly around their immediate neighborhood.

This is an exceptional opportunity to own what has to be one of the nicest original 1924 Packards in existence.  With an elegant bodystyle, the right colors of Packard Blue and Black with only 12,171 original miles and only two family ownership since new, how can a car be more “Investment Grade”?  This has never been shown at a major concours event and has heretofore not been known in the car club circles.

If you are a serious collector of Packards or Preservation Class cars this represents an incredible opportunity.  But hurry as there is only one in the World.  For inquiries please contact Harry at harry@classicpromenade.com or call 602.245.7200.

Interesting Fact: The Packard Six is an aptly named six-cylinder model that was produced during the Great Depression era. This fact actually reduced the Packard brand from being strictly luxury based as the public’s view of the company.   Packard saw success with the Six, however, as it appealed more to the public as a “people’s car”. Manufactured by a traditional luxury brand but at the price of a mid-range automaker. This combination made the Packard Six one of the most successful cars in their line and helped them to survive the Great Depression.   Overall, the Packard Six was simply a less powerful and cheaper version of the cars that Packard was already producing. With that in mind, the Packard Six became one of the most remembered cars of the Packard Era and these vehicles are still hunted by car collectors and enthusiasts due to their uniqueness.
