This is the absolute top-of-the-line wagon available for 1958: the Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country 9-passenger wagon!! Although not yet confirmed, it was stated that only about 428 of the New Yorker Town & Country Wagons were made in 1958, making it one of the most rare luxury wagons ever offered. This particular wagon is rarer still as it was fitted from new with most of the options available in 1958, such as:
- Factory air conditioning
- Cruise control
- Nine passenger configuration (rather than six)
- Full power including windows, seats, etc.
This T&C Wagon was ordered new in Los Angeles by a gentleman and was kept by him until about 1972, when the wagon received its second owner. This wagon has survived so well because it has been in California or Arizona its entire life. According to research, only 14 of these Wagons are extant today.
This particular T&C Wagon garnered considerable attention from its last owner, Gary Whitehead. Gary searched for some time for a worthy New Yorker Town & Country Wagon to restore and found this example in Arizona. Upon acquiring it in 1998, Gary embarked on a full restoration, including: full engine and transmission rebuild (at considerable expense), brakes, suspension, electrical components and full cosmetics. We have the pleasure of completing minor details to make this an even stronger candidate for concours events and touring.
Gary maintained a comprehensive file of the restoration history which confirms an investment of considerable time and expenditure. He also personalized this example by choosing colors similar to those offered by Chrysler but specific to his unique tastes.
The livery is finished in a handsome deep red with white contracts. The interior is finished in red with grey “Fontainbleau” Jacquard cloth inserts faithfully reproduced by SMS fabrics to the original specifications. The odometer presently shows 51,200 miles and we cannot ascertain the total mileage due to the restoration.
Of course this New Yorker has the famous 392 hemi V8 (6.4L) with 345 hp pared with the venerable three-speed Torque-Flite push-button automatic transmission providing ample power for modern use as well as towing boats and Airstream trailers!
The 1958 Chryslers are spectacular motorcars. In 1957, Chrysler made a major breakthrough by introducing the torsion bar front suspension. This configuration created one of the best handling luxury wagons of all time.
The suspension, pared with the low stance and wide tracking wheels make for a great handling motorcar. This particular T&C Wagon also has a newer set of wide white walled radials for event better safety and handling.
We enjoy having this T&C Wagon and will continue to update this information as we complete the minor details and participate in various events with this fabulous motorcar! Please contact us with any questions!!
